  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In large skillet, combine beef, green peppers and onion. Cook until meat has browned.
  • Stir in spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer 5 minutes.
  • Pour 1 cup of meat sauce mixture into the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish.
  • Top with half of the pasta.
  • Then a layer of 2 cups of mozzarella cheese and all of the parmesan cheese.
  • For the next layer, add 2 cups of sauce, remaining pasta and mozzarella cheese.
  • Top with remaining sauce.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes or until hot and bubbly.
  • NOTE: To make ahead--completely assemble then refrigerate. Cook the assembled meal right before serving. You may have to add some cooking time because of the refrigeration. To make clean up easier, consider foil lining the baking dish. Easy clean up is so nice when entertaining!

  1. I followed the recipe exactly and this was not like any mostaccioli I've ever had. There wasn't enough sauce and the sauce wasn't very tomatoey. The green peppers were really gross in it too, wish I would've left them out.

  2. So, my husband liked this. My kids did not like the meet or the green peppers. I used italian sausage instead of beef...too many green peppers. I would eliminate those but keep the onion. Also, there are no spices added to this??? I added 2 cloves of garlic with the peppers and onions and salt and pepper. Shocked this called for nothing. Still was bland. After sauce simmered, tasted it and added italian seasoning until it was tasty. I am continuing on for my quest for the perfect recipe!! A non meat version with just lots of cheese for the kiddos!

  3. Great recipe as a starting place. My jar of sauce was smaller than recipe called for. I Added a can of peeled tomatoes in basil sauce and 1/4 cup of red wine to rinse the jar. Added 1 tsp each onion powder, garlic powder and Italian blend of seasonings. Asiago cheese instead of Parmesan and half the mozzarella. When I make it again, I plan to use the second half of the mozzarella as the top rather than sauce. I grated an extra 1/4 cup of Asiago on the top and broiled for 5 minutes before serving. This gave it a light golden crust.

  4. Wonderful Donna! This was my very first time making mostaccioli and thought this was a perfect recipe. Only thing I did different was added a little sugar to my sauce mixture and only used mozzarella cheese and no parmesan. Thanks!!

  5. Excellent Dish! My family and boyfriend and his family love this dish! I had a package of ground intalian sausage so used that instead of ground beef. I also just used Ragu Mushroom & Green Pepper spaghetti sauce because I did not have a can tomatoe sauce. It came out perfect! Thank you so much Donna!!!
