- 1⁄2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine, softened
- 1⁄2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1⁄2 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 2 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour

Corn Syrup Paint
- 4 teaspoons corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon water
- food coloring (four colors)

- Using a large bowl, cream the butter, shortening and sugar with an electric mixer. Add the egg and vanilla and bear until light and fluffy. In another bowl, mix the soda, salt and flour together. Stir the dry ingredients into the creamed ingredients until well blended.
- Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes. Divided in half and wrap half in plastic wrap and return to refrigerator. Roll out other half to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut with cookie cutters and place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
- Put one teaspoon corn syrup and 1/4 teaspoon water into each of four different cups. Tint each with food coloring. Stir well. Paint the unbaked cookies before baling using a small paintbrush.
- Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Bake for 9 to 10 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned. Remove from cookie sheet and cool on wire rack.
