Patriotic Gelatin Salad

"Serve this patriotic salad on your next Memorial Day or 4th of July celebration! It's a cool refreshing treat in the hot summer months and is an attractive salad to add to your buffet table! The total prep time is 7 hours, which includes chilling time. You must chill each layer for at least 30 minutes before adding the next colored layer. I usually make this on a day that I'm going to be home all day and I do the layers in between doing my cleaning!"

  • In four separate bowls, dissolve each package of gelatin into 1 cup boiling water.
  • Add ½ cup cold water to each and stir.
  • Pour one bowl of blue gelatin into an oiled 10-inch fluted tube pan.
  • Chill until almost set (about 30 minutes).
  • Set other 3 bowls of gelatin aside at room temperature.
  • Combine unflavored gelatin in remaining ½ cup cold water; let stand 5 minutes.
  • Heat milk in saucepan over medium heat (just below boiling).
  • Stir in softened unflavored gelatin and sugar until sugar is dissolved.
  • Remove from heat; stir in sour cream and vanilla until smooth.
  • When blue gelatin in pan is almost set, carefully spoon in 1 ½ cups of the sour cream mixture over blue layer.
  • Chill until almost set (about 30 minutes).
  • Carefully spoon 1 bowl of red gelatin over cream layer.
  • Chill until almost set (about 30 minutes).
  • Repeat process, adding layers of blue gelatin, cream mixture, and strawberry gelatin, chilling for at least 30 minutes between each.
  • Chill several hours or over night before serving.

  1. This is one of my staples for 4th of July and memorial day. I have been making this desert since 1994. It is spectacular with the red white and blue. And my fav layer is also the white. You can't get any better for something easy and looks and tastes great! Thanx for sharing.
     
  2. This was absolutely gorgeous! I wish I had a camera. It even turned out well given that I completely ignored the directions and almost created a disaster. Remember that the reason for making all the jello mixtures at once is so that they will be COOL enough to layer appropriately without MELTING the layer beneath. Guess what kind of problems I had! LOL Even if, like me, you don't have enough bowls to follow the directions exactly, it is possible to time this so it works out perfectly. As soon as you have the first layer in the fridge, prepare the white stuff. Then make the third layer. Then, at least as soon as you have placed the third layer in the pan, prepare the next layer. They have to be ROOM TEMPERATURE in order to layer (although the bottom one can be slightly warmer). Also, if your house is warm, or it is humid, or if (like me <blush>) you have just had the refrigerator door hanging open to clean it, you will need to count on an hour for each layer to set. It took me a total of 6 hours to get the final layer into the fridge. This filled my 9X13 glass pan, but I would like to use a pretty mold next time. The taste was also excellent. "Brilliant" was a great way to describe the white layer, which I used all of by simply dividing it in half.
     
  3. Made this for the cook-out on the 4th. It got mixed reviews from the family. Everyone thought it was very pretty, but the kids didn't like the white layer (I thought the white layer was the best part). I made as directed, but I also had some of the "white" leftover. Will add another 1/2 cup to each white layer next time maybe. I had to let the layers chill a little longer than 30 minutes, maybe my fridge isn't cold enough. Overall, I thought this dish was very attractive and quite tasty. I think maybe I'll do an orange, green, and purple or black one for Halloween! :)
     
  4. This jello is BEAUTIFUL! I didn't have the proper pan, so I used a cut glass round bowl. I do not plan to remove it from the bowl as it is gorgeous as it is. I also did not make layers, but rather, one red, one white and one blue. I had extra white jello, so put it in another bowl and the kids snarfed it up for lunch today Thanks for making me look like a star in the kitchen!
