Paula Deen's Spicy Cinnamon Cake

"This is a very simple, but oh so delightful spice cake. I saw Paula make this on her show and since I love Love LOVE cinnamon, had to make one. I did already have everything on-hand because I use spice cake mixes for my gingerbread men. I always stock up at the holidays when they're on sale. Next time you need a coffee cake, serve this one!"

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 10-inch tube pan.
  • Combine cake mix, instant pudding, sour cream, eggs, and corn oil and beat together well.
  • In a separate bowl, combine sugar, cinnamon, and pecans.
  • Pour half of batter into prepared pan and sprinkle with sugar mixture, reserving a little to sprinkle on top.
  • Pour the rest of batter into pan and sprinkle with the rest of sugar mixture.
  • Bake 1 hour. Let cool and remove from pan.

  1. Oh My Gosh! I didn't realize that the cinnamon and sugar mix was to accent between layers & I added it I N T O the cake mix! :/

  1. So moist so good! I put some whole pecans in the bottom of the pan before I put the batter in. It looked nice when I took it out of the pan. In step 5 the sugar mixture did not stick to the top/bottom of the cake very well when turned out. Next time I may try raw sugar and put it in the bottom of the pan before the batter goes in. My cake was done in 50 minutes. Made for *Cake a Thon in Memory of Chef I Am* 2007
     
  2. This is a great cake. I especially love the sweet taste of the cinnamon, sugar and pecans you put on top, or actually bottom of the cake. Will make again. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the wonderful smell this cake has when it's baking, WOW it filled the house.
     
  3. I made this as a treat last night for my children because they cleaned the house! What a fabulous, easy recipe this was. It went together easily and quickly. I used Recipe #45672 Pampered Chef Baking Spice instead of the cinnamon called for and it was wonderful....it intensified the spice flavor of the whole cake. I barely let the cake cool enough before taking the first slice. Pure heaven. This morning, I noticed 3/4 of the cake was gone. Definitely a winner! I will be making this again and remembering Amy with each and every bite.
     
  4. loved the fact that this cake is so easy to throw together and does not even remotely taste that it is so easy. does not taste like it started out with a cake mix. the sour cream and pudding mix make it really rich and luscious and the pecans and cinnamon really add an intense taste and texture to the cake. i did use cannola oil because that is what i had on hand. wish i could thank amy for posting this great recipe.
     
  5. I love this cakr..just like a soc it to me cake except for spice cake mix. I make at least twice a month, my family loves it. Thanks for posting...I like using the spice cake mix!

  1. I had to mod this recipe a little- I didn't have the correct pan so i just used a 9"x13" square pan. I also omitted the nuts (because I don't care for them), used greek yogurt instead of sour cream, and olive oil (that's all I had). This is a delicious recipe, it's very similar to a coffee cake and tastes wonderful even when reheated for breakfast or a snack the next day. The only issue I had was the cooking time- mine was done after 30 mins and probably could have been pulled a little sooner (it was staring to get dry), but that could have been the pan I used so I won't reflect that in the rating. Very delicious recipe, will definitely make again.

Her smile was evident in every forum post as well in her wonderful descriptions of recipes. Amy touched the lives of hundreds upon hundreds of members here at Zaar and her love was felt worldwide. Her “message” was a simple one, live life to the fullest, stay positive, love your loved ones each day, and don’t sweat the small stuff. In fact, Amy was so positive and outgoing that a lot of members did not even realize the seriousness of her illness. The day Amy passed away was one of the saddest moments here in the Zaar community. Tears all over the world were shed on that day. Unable to attend the funeral and show our love, members sent single red roses tagged with their Zaar name and country along with a single white rose to represent Amy, our beloved Redneck Epicurean. The outpouring of love from her Zaar family was overwhelming and brought much comfort to her family. This truly is a remarkable place! Luckily, we have Amy’s page to remind us of how special she was. It was amazing to me to know that a little bug like me can make such an impact while being disabled. I'm a diabetic who refuses to let health problems get me down. I'm 27, single, and live in a rural area. I am a born-again Christian, a Baptist by denomination, and a great cook by the Grace of God. I come from a long line of cooks on both sides of the family. I go to a small country church where the majority of us are family and my family cemetery is on the property. We have "eatin' meetin's" every fifth Sunday, holidays, and every other chance we can get. Sometimes it's full meals and sometimes it's soup and sandwiches. Most of the ladies at my church are good cooks. Everyone knows I've had gourmet training and really expect if I bring something for it to be good, especially since my mom is a great cook too. (See her chocolate pie recipe in my cookbook.) When the Christians all gather in heaven for the Feast that will never end (and let me just say, if you know my situation, you know I have terrible problems with the intestines) I will not have tummy problems, I will eat like there is no tomorrow, and I will be the one adding cinammon to the milk and honey because Jesus knows I love it! A recipe that was ultra easy to prepare, delicious, and I ate until I was sick and would feed to anyone will earn you 5 stars. If something was missing, cooking time was off quite a bit, amounts of ingredients were off...just a little something will get you 4 stars. So on and so forth. My likes/dislikes, pet peeves, etc: Hot food that’s cold, cold food that’s hot. Also, I’ve read several “reviews” by people here who are totally critical to the negative that give the impression that they feel they are the all-knowing authority on the subject. Chances are, they do not know everything about whatever it is they are talking about and their comments make me feel like giving them a swift kick in the hind end. I guess I just feel if you have some kind of positive advice or if are giving negative reviews that have a valid justification, that’s cool. But if you’re just ripping someone to shreds, you’re rude and hateful and I don’t like that. My favorite recipes tend to be those "family-style" things like comfort food.
