Rachael Ray's Super Scrumptious Sloppy Joes

"This recipe is from Food Network's Rachael Ray. I like it b/c it uses tomato sauce instead of ketchup, and you can spice it up as you like. I add more onions as well as some garlic. * I like to use a little less brown sugar, as we like ours spicier rather than sweet."

directions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat.
  • Add oil and meat to the pan.
  • Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up.
  • Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning.
  • Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine.
  • When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet.
  • Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce with meat for 5 minutes.
  • Add tomato sauce and paste to pan.
  • Stir to combine.
  • Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer.
  • Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops.
  • Serve with your favorite sides or sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, dill pickles and Potato Salad.
  • We like to put a thick slice of cheddar on top of the meat in the sandwich and broil it for a few minutes to melt. YUM.

Questions & Replies

  1. My mother use to make sloppy joes with whole tomatoes back in the 60's, would you happen to have a recipe for it. I know my mom used tomatoes that she had caned. My sister was asking me if I knew how to make it like that. I can't find a recipe for it. Thank you Rose Cox

Reviews

  1. I made this one day when I was craving sloppy joe's and couldn't find the packet of seasoning like my mother used to use. <br/>We loved this so much, I'll never use the packet again!

  2. Mmm-mmm, very good! Spicier than other sloppy joe recipes I've tried--I did add about 3 tsp. of the Montreal Steak Seasoning. I will definitely make these again. Thanks!

  3. This is one of the best sloppy joes I made. DH really liked this one. :) We had it with monterey jack cheese, mustard, relish, hot peppers in a jar. Really good. Thanks newspapergal :) Made for I Recommend tag game

  4. I love this recipe with a few changes...I had used this before out of the Rachel Ray coookbook and I made the following changes: Left out bell pepper, used the whole can of tomato paste, 1 can of tomato sauce and 1 cup of water, use 3 T vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, salt, pepper, smokey paprika, and cumin to taste. And finally I used about 2 1/2 lbs of ground beef. Makes wonderful leftovers!!

  5. Very good and very easy evening meal.

Tweaks

  1. I use a can of tomato paste only and add just enough water for the thickness I like. Also I add 1 TBSP of liquid smoke. We serve over a bread that has seeds and nuts in it and top with cheese. No canned or packaged stuff, I also use ground turkey.

  2. This was very good! I didn't have tomato sauce so I used pureed tomatoes instead. I cut down on the sugar and we thought it was a great balance of sweet and spicy. I toasted French bread and served them open faced. What an easy, delicious meal!

  3. These are fantastic sloppy joes! They are sweet, but that's just how we like them. Except for using ground turkey instead of beef, I followed the recipe exactly (including using McCormick brand spicy steak seasoning). It was a little more runny than we like so I let it simmer for about 45 minutes and it thickened up just right.
