"radler Mass" (German Beer Cooler)

"As I watch my dear food network right now, it's on Dinner Impossible with Robert making meals from beer, and this reminds me of something I learned when I was living in the southern part of Germany. I figured I should share this as we don't get anything like this in the U.S. but it's really good. I normally don't like beer that much because it's too bitter for my taste most times, and German beer is the strongest I know! Anyway, this recipe can be made with any kind of beer but dark beer works really well. The combination sweetens up the beer a little, lowers the alcohol content even more, and gives it a unique taste, it's a little sweeter and less bitter, I guess you could call this the German version of a wine cooler... try it for your next party, even those who don't normally choose beer as their drink at a party will like it."

ingredients

  • 1 cup beer (or any amount you like)
  • 1 cup carbonated lemon-lime beverage (I use 7-up, but Sprite, or even generic lemon lime works)
  • ice
  • 1 lemon twist (garnish) (optional)

directions

  • Take equal parts of beer and lemon lime soda over just a little ice to keep it chilled; be careful it will foam up a lot so take it slow. As you come to taste it, you can change how much beer or soda - if you really like beer the combination can be 3/4 beer to 1/4 soda (or vice versa if you don't like beer that much but want a taste of it). In Germany, at least where I lived in the Bavarian area in the south, this is very popular with the young people. Worth a try! :).

  1. Thanks for this recipe! Have enjoyed this in Germany and there is nothing more refreshing in summer. I've used both Sprite and a European-style lemon-lime sparkling water that they sell here in our area (Meijer stores in Michigan/Indiana). The sparkling water style is closest to what I've had in Germany. The bubbles are important as is the sweetness of the lemon/lime drink - we've tried unsweetened, flavored seltzers and they don't do it - nor does regular, flat lemonade. Couldn't go to Germany this year but this made it come to me :)

  2. Wonderful! This is so very refreshing and a great way to remove that bite from a strong beer. I have tried this with both dark and lite beer and I feel the results are the same. I use the 3/4 beer to 1/4 soda mixture with no ice and that is perfect for me. Thanks for posting this. Made for Fall 2011 PAC.

  3. Hi there! I've enjoyed "The Radler" many a time, both abroad and here in the U.S. of A. Be sure to use a sparkling lemonade, as the lemony effervescence is essential for an authentic tasting Radler, in my opinion. Very light and refreshing, and a favorite even among non-beer drinkers. Thank you for a walk down memory lane. Prosit!

  4. I made this last night for DH and I. It's so hot here and this was very refreshing. I used regular beer but I'll try a dark one next time. Made for I Recommend Tag, May 09. Thanks for posting!

  5. This makes a nice, light, refreshing drink! I wanted something light after an afternoon of working outside and this hit the spot. I used diet Sprite in a 1-part-beer to 2-part-Sprite ratio. Thanks for posting this recipe! Made for the Best of 2008 event

By day, I torture college students in my public speaking classes, and run the speech tutoring Lab at a local college, and I also deal with my 3 children and make sure my husband keeps our family business on track. Then in my spare time, I still manage to cook, which to me is my "stress relief." I love to try new recipes, and my big challenge in my family is that no one likes to try anything new... my husband has the most basic tastes, and our sons follow him and can barely get themselves to eat those green things, what do they call them, um, vegetables. They swear that hamburgers are vegetable... ha ha. I'm the only one in the family who loves fish and seafood, all kinds of vegetables and fruit - everyone else is take-out pepperoni pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, and fried chicken. UGH! Where did I go wrong! At least the students at my Speech Lab love all those brownies I bake and bring for them.
