Regular White Icing (Add Butter to Make Buttercream Icing)

"I love this icing with the White Cake recipe that I posted. This is not a thick icing like those you buy. This also came from my sister-in-law. We use this for lots of different baked goods that require icing."

ingredients

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

directions

  • Mix powdered sugar and vanilla.
  • Add milk teaspoon by teaspoon until desired consistency.
  • Dash salt.
  • Note: Do NOT pour in the milk.
  • Trust me.
  • Do this as instructed, or you will have to keep adding sugar until you get a good consistency, and then you will end up with enough icing to cover surplus amout of cakes!
  • (If you are icing everything in your home, then go right ahead).

Reviews

  1. Instructions unclear; entire house now iced

  2. I liked this icing b/c it didn't call for shortening. It was a good buttercream icing. I doubled the batch to icing 2 layer cake and it just made it!

  3. Idk HOW much milk I added, but it's great!!! I just need more extract.

  4. I have been trying to find a white or buttercream icing that is not super sweet. This is what I have been looking for! AMAZING!

  5. I think you are so funny! Thanks for the laugh. I chose to go the route of icing everything in my home! LOL! J/K!!! Still giggling over here!

Tweaks

  1. I doubled the milk, turned out great. I also used lemon extract instead of vanilla for my lemon cake.

  2. This was excellent! I made cupcakes using 1 box of cake mix and 1 can of pumpkin, and I wanted to jazz them up a little. To make it a little more chocolate-y I substituted out the last 1/2 c of powdered sugar for hot cocoa mix (it was all I had). Turned out fabulous!

I am a 30 year old wife, and mother of 3. I have been a stay at home mom for 10 years now, and thank goodness I have been able to. I wouldn't have traded this time for anything in the world. I love to cook, especially bake. What can I say? Desserts are my favorites! I have some great recipes that I am required to make for each and every holiday that my family spends together. No ifs ands or buts about it...if I don't bring my candy, I may as well stay home! Being an at home mom gave me lots of time to try new recipes and alter those that could be good, with just a little of this and a splash of that. I'm getting ready to undertake an even bigger task than staying home with my children, if there is such a thing, by going to college to become an elementary school teacher. My major will be teaching, grades 1-6, but I'm also going to minor in special education, or working with children with disabilities. This is something I have wanted to do since 3rd grade, and I'm finally going to have my chance. I work at the school in my youngest daughters' classroom, and I have had the chance to work with children from all sorts of backgrounds over the years. I can't imagine myself doing anything else at this point in my life. When I graduated from high school, I went to school and got my cosmetologist license, and I will always love doing hair, nails, make up and make overs, but my passion is children. I also love to talk, as you can plainly see if you are reading this. Well, I hope you are enjoying this site and make sure you try some of the recipes here. They have something for everyone and every need. Don't be scared to try it, you just might like it!
