Rei's Favorite Cookies (dog Treats)

"Simple and wholesome - Rei, my Japanese spitz puppy would beg for these! Use any baby food you like as long as there's no onions in the it (some dogs may be allergic to corn too). BTW if your dog is sensitive to wheat, you can also use brown rice flour although amount may vary. Just mix till u get a slightly sticky dough that you roll into balls with."

directions

 • Beat baby food, eggs and salt together in a large bowl.
 • Stir in flour until dough comes together (you might need slightly more/less flour).
 • Roll dough into balls (about 1/2 inch) and place on parchment-lined baking sheet.
 • Flatten each balls with spoon/fork; bake for 25-35mins at 350°F (depends on how hard and crunchy you want the cookies to be; Rei likes extra crunchy so I baked at 350F for 40mins).
 • Remove and cool thoroughly on wire racks; store in airtight container (I store cookies in the fridge to prevent mold).

 1. OK...I hate to be the lone dissenter, but really...it looks like in half of the five star reviews, folks made SERIOUS modifications to the recipe as it is posted...so those really aren't reviews of this recipe...they're reviews of each individual change. I have to admit, I'm the dork that tastes the food I make for my dogs. And honestly, this recipe tasted like whole wheat flour and nothing else. I used beef and mixed vegetable baby food and got absolutely zero of that flavor. Yep, my dogs ate it, but really....my dogs eat pretty much anything I give to them so I'm not basing anything on that. I'm NOT judging or rating any of the modifications folks posted in other reviews....I'm just saying that I made the recipe as posted and won't be making it again.

 2. The dogs are LOVING this. I used canned pumpkin in place of the baby food, 1 banana in place of the 2 eggs, and a mix of brown rice flour and oat flour. I also added cinnamon and rosemary to preserve. I used bone and dog cookie cutters and then dipped them in melted carob. They're still drying on the shelf and my 8 month old standard poodle is sniffing and whining for more!

 3. My granddaughter makes these and our dogs love them. Yes, we do a modification. Our baby jars are only 2.5 ounces, so she adds a 1/4 cup peanut butter.

 4. I have 3 small dogs. All VERY excited over these treats. My Coton de Tulear does her best to steal them from the Havanese, hoarding them in here cheeks. Sadly for my pups I gave half the first batch to friend for her dogs so batch 2 is about to commence!
11/9/12 ADDENDUM: When I don't have baby food on hand (I stock up just for this when it's on sale) I substitute canned pumpkin or baked and mashed sweet potato and my girls love the variations. I also have switched to brown rice flour. Great basic recipe that allows for lots of fun and flexibility!

 5. I've made these a few times now and thought it was about time to let you know how much my little chihuahua'a love them! Very easy to make. Mojo and Scooby can't wait to eat them. They'll come back for more, over and over again. Everytime I walk in the kitchen they follow me thinking they are going to get a treat. I'll never buy treats from the store again, thanks! This is a keeper!

Tweaks

 1. We used 2.5 oz jars of baby food and 1/4 cup peanut butter.

 2. I have made these about 4 times now and Max and Stewie still LOVE them! And so does my mom's dog. I never have baby food on hand so I substituted pumpkin instead. They are so easy to make too! Thanks so much for sharing!

 3. I just made these for my 2 dogs and they seem pretty satisfied! I used pumpkin in place of the baby food and put about 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter into the mixture. They rolled out nicely, and it was very easy to cut out tiny little daisy treats! The dough wasn't sticky or messy at all. I do think I'll follow another reveiw next time and add a banana for a little extra sweetness. Very good recipe!

 5. My DD little pup, Winnie was not feeling very well and had not eaten during the day. I used organic pumpkin instead of the baby food. These were originally made as a treat for Christmas, but already knowing that pumpkin is good for the stomach, I gave some to my DD to see if she would eat them. We had to break them into pieces, but she loved the treat. She later came up to our house and I broke up another to give to her. She looked like a little chipmunk, storing the cookies in her mouth.....and later I found part of the cookie down my favorite chair. I would make these again for my favorit little girl!!!

RECIPE SUBMITTED BY

Hi everyone! I'm addicted to recipezaar - there are so many things that I love about this site; the wonderful people, recipes, lots of great pictures and there's always someone who'll answer my cooking/baking/general question. I grew up in Malaysia, but now live in sunny Singapore. Both are beautiful tropical (read: HOT!) countries in Southeast Asia. There are so many good food here, especially ethnic stuff like spicy Malaysian curries (which will clear the worst blocked nose), flaky & crispy Indian roti paratha/canai, homey Chinese stir-fries, rich & decadent Asian desserts like kuih lapis (Malay many-layers cake), pineapple tarts, crumbly peanut cookies etc.
