"This is allegedly a Texas recipe. One of DH's friend brought it to a party that we had. It is called a Sad Cake because it falls on purpose, the taste is not Sad."

  1. A favorite when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's made by my mom, in Texas of all places. When trying to describe this to some who have never had it I tell them it's like brown sugar brownies.

  2. I believe the US version did come from Texas. My wife saw it in a cookbook that had almost all Texas favorites and was published in Texas. The European version is Irish I believe. We started making this in 2006 on a regular basis. When we bring it out for guests, you always hear someone say, 'looks sad, tastes great'. Don't change a thing it has been around almost 300 years in some similar form or other.

  3. I remember my Grandma making this cake! I am so glad to find the recipe. The response I receive when sharing this are unanimous "The best cake I have ever had". "Anything but Sad!"
