Sausage Gravy for Biscuits and Gravy

"The other grandkids and I always ask our grandmother to make her biscuits and gravy for us! So I knew I had to get her recipe. This is a simple sausage gravy that you can use over your favorite biscuits, whether store-bought or homemade! I have used skim milk before, and it worked fine... just be patient since it takes longer to thicken."

  1. I made this recipe on 8/10/14 for part of mine and my SO's Dinner. Yes I said Dinner, sometimes you just have to have Breakfast for dinner. Except for cutting the milk down to 2 cups, the recipe was made as it was written. What made this " stand out " for me was the butter, never heard of adding butter to sausage gravy. This was served over homemade( of course ;) ) biscuits. Both of us really enjoyed the taste a lot. Thanks so much for posting, and " Keep Smiling :) "

  2. Just like home when I was a kid. I made half of the recipe but kind of wish that I'd made the full amount now. We had this for dinner with iced tea and a small fruit salad and enjoyed every bite. I too used the fat in the pan and I don't feel to bad about it. I make this so seldom (years pass between making biscuits and gravy!) that it a rare indulgence and sometimes you just have to go for the gusto. Thanks Starry, we loved it.

  3. What can i say? Awesome! The sausage was crumbled and cooked in the pan, butter added and once melted the flour was sprinkled over all. It was salted lightly and lots of freshly ground black pepper added. The milk was added along with just a pinch of sugar. I'm not sure where I learned to add the sugar but I have been doing it for years. This was made with gluten free flour and served over gluten free homemade biscuits.

  4. Yum! Great comfort food. I made as directed but did not drain the fat from the sausage. Like Lavender Lynn said - I think that that is where most of the flavor comes from. I used Jimmy Dean hot sausage and 2% milk. Thanks Starrynews for a great meal. Grandson thanks you too! Made for Tic Tac Toe Spring 2010.

  5. Superb sausage gravy recipe! Made this for breakfast today and we really enjoyed it. I used Lincolnshire sausage which worked very well as pepper was already in the sausage. It took slightly longer than I expected to thicken- about 10 minutes, so be patient! It's well worth the wait!
