directions

  • Mix together all the ingredients for the meatballs in large mixing bowl.
  • Shape into balls the size of golf balls.
  • Place meatballs in shallow baking dish.
  • Combine sauce ingredients.
  • Pour over meat.
  • Bake at 350 for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Sauce should be caramelized, but not dry.
  • Meatballs can be made ahead of time and frozen.
  • (Place frozen meatballs in pan; cover with sauce and bake. Baking time may vary) I've never done it with this recipe, but the crockpot could be a possibility!

  1. A real winner, these meatballs tasted delicious. The addition of the mustard made a big difference. I would reduce the sugar content though next time.

  2. Very tasty meatballs. Incredibly easy prep & instructions - perfect for busy nights. I also found the sauce to be a bit too sweet - next time I will halve the sugar. However, these were definitely a success with my family and I would make them again. You are greatly missed, Silent Cricket.

  3. I was a little skeptic using oatmeal in meatballs but these were delightful! I have placed almost every recipe from Silent Cricket to be made at a later time into my recipe box. Chef Martha had shared a great many wonderful recipes with us. She will be missed dearly. God has a special place for wonderful people and now she is in that place.

  4. We really liked this! Since the chef suggested doing this in the crockpot, I decided to use that method of cooking. I made the meatballs two days early and froze them. When cooking them, I put the frozen meatballs in my crockpot, covered them with the sauce and cooked on low for 8 hours. Perfect! The mustard added a nice twang and we loved the sweet tasting sauce. Thanks!

  5. This looks tasty but the sauce is overpowering. It is very strong and almost harsh. All you can smell is ketchup and mustard- you feel like you're at the ballpark. I will admit that we didn't eat ithis- we each tried a bite and called for pizza. Sorry...

(As many of you know Silent Cricket passed away on Feb. 29. Since she loved Recipezaar so much and so many on Recipezaar have shown their love for her, and have enjoyed her recipes, her personal information will remain here indefinitely just as she wrote it. Her lines at the end of this section sound somewhat prophetic as the last chapter of her earthly existence has been written.) Well, the time has come for me to change my users' name. After being, "OzCoMartha" because of having lived for three years in Australia and then moving to Colorado, I have decided to "turn over a new leaf." I chose this name because many moons ago I used to be able to "chirp" like a cricket and the "silent" refers to the present time when I'm taking a break...But, perhaps after a season, however long I decide that needs to be, I may be back and then I will fill in more details about myself...
