"Just like the name suggests...a simple sauce to make but a pleasure to eat. This recipe comes from Giada De Laurentis...Everyday Italian. Update Sept. 07--bay leaves appeared in the directions, but not ingredients. Fixed now!!!"

directions

  • In a large pot, heat oil over medium-high heat.
  • Add onion and garlic and saute until soft and translucent--about 2 minutes. Add celery and carrot and season with salt and pepper. Saute until all the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, basil and bay leaves and reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer for 1 hour or until thick. Remove bay leaves and taste for seasoning. If sauce tastes too acidic, add unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, to round out the flavour.
  • I like my sauce a little spicier, so I add a few red pepper flakes.

  1. Wonderful

  2. This is my go-to recipe for marinara sauce. I love it. I add a little brown sugar and also add a little Italian seasoning. Freezes beautifully as well.

  3. Really good, super easy basic recipe. I think I'll add a couple more cloves of garlic next time. Won't be wasting my money buying canned sauce anymore. Thanks for posting.

  4. Not being a big fan of tomatoes, I made this. I just adjusted it with a good splash of port, more garlic and a dash of brown vinegar. Delish.

  5. This has become our favorite tomato sauce. I made the following changes to it. Add brown sugar instead of using butter and a little red wine. Used this as a base for recipe #72903

  2. This was really good marinara sauce. I did use dry basil that I estimated the amount for our taste. Instead of the crushed tomatoes I used pureed tomatoes and didnt need to use a food processor. Served on ziti pasta with freshly grated parmesan cheese and it was very good. Thank you JanuaryBride for posting this recipe. Made and reviewed for the Vegetarian/Vegan Recipe Swap #6.
