Easy Weeknight Sloppy Joes

"This is found in my recipe collection under "Mrs. McCann's Barbeque". It was handed down from a neighbor of my great-aunt's sometime in the 1940's. I prefer to use ground round so there isn't so much fat. Gets better the longer it simmers."

directions

  • Cook meat slowly in skillet with salt and onion.
  • Meanwhile, make sauce by mixing together all other ingredients and cooking slowly over low heat for 15 minutes.
  • Drain (not much to drain if you use ground round) and add meat.
  • Let simmer for at least an hour, stirring from time to time, to let meat absorb the sauce.
  • Serve on toasted hamburger buns.

  1. This was great. Made it a couple times, already. Most ingredients are usually on hand anyway. Beats the heck out of canned or boxed mixes.

  2. This is even better if you use 1/4 cup of packed brown sugar, instead of the white sugar.

  3. This is a good, old-fashioned tasting slopppy joe recipe. The mustard flavor comes through strong and clear. I choose to make this recipe because I had all the ingredients on hand.

  4. Looks great! But I think there's an error in the Directions. Where it says Drain etc. and add meat, it should say add SAUCE, not meat.

  5. These "Sloppy Joe's" are outstanding. My wife makes them on a fairly regular basis. Fortunately for me, I have an understanding wife. She leaves the onions out of this dish just for me because I do not like onions at all in anything. Not all of us do like onions in spite of what you onion lovers think. Join my club "OGRE". Tweaks

  1. the recipe is good, but the just make sure you double the sauce ingredients and don't simmer for a full hour (20 min was enough for me) or it will be too dry and not like the traditional sloppy joes.

  2. I add 1 diced RED bell pepper for color and sweetness and omit the sugar. a bit tastier and healthier.

  3. I added some garlic powder to the meat and sauce.

  4. I added some garlic powder to the meat and sauce.

  5. This was delicious. I will definitely make it again in the future. I did substitute sugar for brown sugar though.
