directions

  • Chop/slice the sausage, cabbage, and onion.
  • In a large non-stick skillet, pre-cook the sliced sausage about 3 minutes to render some of the fat out. Remove sausage from skillet and drain on paper towels if needed. Set aside. Wipe the skillet clean.
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add cabbage and onion and cook and stir on medium-high for about 5 minutes, until cabbage starts to wilt.
  • Add remaining ingredients, and the sausage.
  • Cover the skillet and cook for about 10 minutes.
  • Uncover, and finish cooking until cabbage is desired tenderness and most of liquid has been reduced.

  3. This was pretty good, I had sausage and cabbage on hand so looked for something to do with both and fund this. I did add a few pinches of sugar right before it was done to cut the acid in the tomatoes. The big surprise was the next day, I guess the flavors melded and it made an excellent lunch.

  4. I used both butter and bacon grease. Substituted stewed tomatoes since it's what I had. Used a touch of old Bay. Also added a leftover pork chop with grilled potatoes!

  5. This is a really great recipe! Used a mix of butter and bacon fat, minced garlic instead of powder, diced tomatoes with green chile, and added cajun seasoning.

Tweaks

  1. I added 1 & 1/2 cup of boiled ( firm) Potato.. Substituted Beef Kielbasa and no tomatoes ( only because I didn't have any ) it was very good!! The pepper really did set it off, especially with the potatoes, the buttery, charred cabbage ...mmmn thank you for sharing!

  2. My mom made this with hotdogs when I was a kid. I was doing the same until I saw Farmer Johns's Hot Links, much better! I've used fresh tomatoes also. I vary my ingredients. This one I added potatoes, bell peppers, & celery.
