Sparkling Panakam

"I found this recipe on the Epicurious website (posted by Heidi Swanson), and I thought I'd post it here for others to enjoy. It's a sparkling version of a traditional Indian beverage that is typically made during the Hindi festival of Sri Rama Navami. Some families also serve Panakam to wedding guests as a welcome gesture. This version is less sweet than most other panakam recipes, so feel free to increase the sugar level to your liking. Yield is 4 cups/1 liter."

directions

  • In a medium pitcher, make a thick paste by stirring together the sugar, ginger, cardamom, lime juice, salt, and a small splash of the sparkling water. Stir until all sugar has dissolved.
  • Add more water, a little at a time, stirring all the while. The mixture will get quite fizzy, so just take it slow.
  • Serve as cold as possible with as many ice cubes wedged into the pitcher as possible.

  1. Wow, NWG was this good. I really liked the way that the mineral water, lime and spices complimented one amother. I usually prefer a sweeter drink but this was perfect just the way it was written. I always grind my spices fresh, it gives a lovely soft subtle flavor that gets lost in the pre ground packaged ones. I didn't grind them super fine so there were flecks of ginger and cardamom in the glass. I loved it. This is a unique drink, light, refreshing and memorable. Thanks for sharing this treat NWG. This site used to be awesome. It was at the top of its game when it was called Recipezaar, but that was many years ago. The site was purchased by Scripps and belly-flopped into mediocrity. A few of the faithful members remained, hoping to wait out the storm of corporate nonsense. But alas, it never got better and just continued on its terminal path to nothingness. So most of the loyal members have vanished and made homes at better recipe sites.
