Spicy Garlic Hummus

"I have tried a lot of hummus recipes, and this one is a combination of a few of my favorites, and is now the only one I use. I grow my own little Super Hot Chili Peppers and so that is what I use, but you can substitute any pepper you like, or use hot pepper flakes. I like a lot of garlic and a bit of a kick, but this recipe is easily alterable to your own tastes so adjust it as you see fit. I like my hummus thick so I usually skip the water. Another nice variation is to add a bit of red, green, and yellow bell peppers. It makes the hummus really pretty! Any hummus lover will tell you that the spread can be used so many ways. My favorite uses for this is as a vegetable dip or as a sandwich spread in a whole wheat veggie wrap. Yum!"

directions

  • Process garbanzo beans, tahini, chili pepper, garlic, and lemon juice in a food processor or blender (I use a mini-chopper) until smooth.
  • Add water as needed to achieve the consistency you prefer.
  • Place mixture into a glass bowl.
  • Stir in cumin, cayenne pepper, paprika, salt and black pepper.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least a couple of hours.
  • The flavor improves greatly if given this time to develop.

  1. Wonderful! The only change I made was to use the water off of the garbanzo beans insteat of tap water. I used a jalepeno for the pepper. Next time I may mince a red pepper too for more color. I may try pepper flakes also. Thank you for submitting

  2. Really good hummus. I used a chipotle chili pepper in adobo sauce and, man, did it come out hot! Whew. There was steam coming out of my ears! But it was very yummy. My husband like it too. Didn't miss the olive oil usually found in hummus at all.

  3. Yumm! A great hummus recipe - but you do need to know how hot your one chili pepper is! ;-) My hummus turned out very hot indeed, but fortunately my friends and I like it hot! Will use less chili the next time, but will definitely stick with this recipe, this is excellent stuff! Thank you!

  4. This is an excellent hummus recipe! The only change I made was to use 3 tablespoons water to give the hummus a more creamy texture. I think my chili pepper may have been a bit large because my hummus came out VERY spicy. I love the spicy-ness, but will likely use less of the chili pepper next time. This recipe is a great 'base' recipe... I definitely look forward to adding bell peppers and other variations in the future!

  5. This is superb hummus. The recipe is easy to follow and make and the hummus much lower in fat than many of the other hummus recipes I've found without sacrificing any of the flavor. I've made it many times and my family just loves the spicy, garlicky flavor. Since my family was so impressed with this recipe I used it as a basis for my very own Roasted Red Pepper Hummus recipe soon to appear right here at Recipezaar. Thanks so much for sharing this great recipe kburie!

My husband and I married straight out of college in July of 1992. I work as the Assistant Manager at a wine shop which allows me to drink on the job! (OK, not that much, but it's still a fun job...) Besides helping customers choose wine they will like (and also help with food and wine pairings for their menus), I also get to help with the catering end of the business, so I get to spend a fair amount of time in the kitchen making fun appetizers and beautiful food displays. I also work part-time at the fromagerie next door. So yeah - that means I eat on the job, too. :^D We live on several peaceful wooded acres on a cute little river in rural NE Wisconsin, with a cranky old-lady Burmese and whatever stray outdoor cats that have decided to adopt us on any given day. The cute puppy in the picture is Jake, our Elhew-bred English Pointer that we brought home on Easter weekend 2007. I've also got 2 painted turtles named Dennis and Fuzz, and a bunch of fish (koi and goldfish, along with the guppies & swordtails in the turtle tank). I USUALLY eat and cook healthy, but I rarely pass up dessert, either. I do not eat red meat, and try to limit other animal products, too. I love to bake, although I seem to collect a lot of scone and biscotti recipes which I NEVER get around to making. I bake and eat A LOT of cookies and muffins... I almost always reduce the sugar by 1/4 and use whole wheat pastry flour for at least part of the flour. Those two changes do so much to make recipes healthier without compromising taste. I try to reduce fat whenever I can, too, but while I want to eat healthy, I still want to ENJOY what I eat!!! I seem to give a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews here - I seem to have a pretty good sense of what I like by looking at a recipe before I try it. Thank you to anyone that tries my recipes in return, or photographs them.
