Split Pea Soup

"One of my favorite comfort foods. Inexpensive, easy, and delicious! Put this in the crockpot in the morning and come home to a wonderful dinner. I got this recipe from a blogging buddy and have made it often."

  • 1 lb split peas
  • 12 lb of smoky ham, chopped (or chopped cooked bacon)
  • 2 quarts water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 14 teaspoon pepper

  • Combine in the crock pot and cook at low for 8-10 hours.

  1. I made this once before, but neglected to read how much split peas to add. I know it was too much, at least double; however the next common sized bag of peas appears to be 3 lbs? Regardless; it turned out remarkably well if not a little thick, and only took some boiling water to get the desired consistency. I definitely intend to prepare it properly as directed sometime soon; but if my folly resulted so well, I can imagine it can only get better!
     
  2. Followed the recipe as written but even after 10 hours on low, it was still not completely cooked...UPDATE: I found out what the problem was! Having never made Split Pea Soup ever before, I didn't know you needed to soak the dried peas in advance before actually making the soup...It might have been nice had this important step been mentioned in the recipe somewhere...Not everyone knows about these things...Once I figured out that pre-soaking the peas was the main problem I tried the recipe again, this time with better results...Thanks anyway for posting this recipe!
