  3. Delicious was the buzz word at dinner! I chose this recipe because it was easy and had a few ingredients. This was the perfect, thick split pea soup! I used a ham steak in place of the bone, and halved the onion and celery instead of dicing for a smoother soup. After reading the reviews about watery-ness, I used 4 cups peas. That was perfect. Also, I only needed to cook for 2 hours, and added a couple spoonfuls of chicken and beef base. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Wonderful recipe though I modified it slightly to suit my tastes. Use chicken broth rather than plain water. Added 1 1/4 cups of Yukon Gold potatoes, and because I like soups and stews with a slight heat I added 1 fresh jalapeno (diced) with seeds, 3 additional gloves of garlic, 1/8 tsp black pepper, and 1/8 tsp. of ginger. Fed it to friends. Rave reviews. Thank you Dancer for the inspiration.

  5. I didn't have leftover ham so I used a ham base added to the boiling water. I only used 3 quarts of water. I added some ham near the end of the cooking; I had some ham slices that I chopped up.
