Stoofvlees (Belgian Beef Stew)

"This is a real Belgian recipe, there are many ways of making it, but this is one I came up with and changed it along the way. It has a rich, sweet sauce and absolutely tastes wonderful! Serve with french fries and apple sauce"

  • Glaze the onion in margarine in a large skillet.
  • Add the beef and cook until it has browned.
  • Add all of the beer, the beef, the chocolate and the bay leaf.
  • Spread the mustard onto the slices of peperkoek or bread and place in top of the meat.
  • Add salt and pepper to your taste.
  • Leave to cook on low heat for at least 1 1/2 hours, but the longer it cooks the better it tastes, stir from time to time preventing it to burn. The sauce should have a pretty thick consistency.
  • The leftovers of this recipe can be frozen or the recipe can easily be doubled.
  • Enjoy!

  1. I found this recipe so easy to follow, and the resulting dish is truly wonderful, that I use it often , and also get requests to cook it again when I invite friends to dinner. It's more than just Belgian winter comfort food, it is outstanding, especially when served with Brown Belgian beer, thanks for the recipe, A M-G.
     
  2. I liked the simple preparation of this meal but find the long cooking time a bit of a pain. Mine tasted a bit bitter. Next time I will add more sugar.
     
  3. This recipe sounded very good, but I'm very sorry to say that we just didn't like the taste. It was too dark and strong to our liking.
     
  4. This was good. I mucked it up because I didn't have enough beer so I subbed beef stock which reduced & made the final dish too salty. But the meat was tender & yummy. It iw very easy to make. I wish I had made rice or noodles to go under it.

I'm the mother to two boys (Yaron °2002, Noah °2004) and I am happily married since 2000. I work as an administrative assistant in a primary school. I have liked cooking since I was a little girl, strangely enough, my mother never really enjoyed cooking, so I don't know where I am getting it from. Cooking is really taking a break for me (at least of my two boys will leave me to it). I try to involve my kids as much as possible in cooking and they already enjoy making cookies, cakes and popsicles. I like to bake so when it's their birthday I let them choose their favourite cake. This year I made a pirate ship for the youngest one and a treasure chest for my oldest. I am active in my children's school and I like to craft when there's time left, which isn't too much lately. Every night before I go to bed, I need to read at least a chapter in a book. It has become such a ritual that it is hard to sleep when I haven't. I do have quite a few cookbooks, but the ones I would miss the most if I'ld lost them (even if I don't make that much recipes out of them) are my great grandmothers cookbooks, which are partly just little pieces of paper with a recipe scribbled onto it. I also really like the cookbooks and tv-shows of Jamie Oliver and Nigela Lawson. I really like the countryside, even if I don't really live in it. (I live in a suburb of Bruges) My dream is to one day buy a small little farmhouse with just a few animals and a beautiful garden, where I could grow some veggies to can in summer. Well, one can dream can we...
