Summer Harvest Oatmeal

"I am always looking for new ways to brighten my daily bowl of oatmeal. This is my latest pairing of dried fruits to create a healthy and satisfying start to the day. Feel free to replace the dried milk with regular and to use less water as I tend to like my oatmeal on the soupy side."

 1. Wow, I just loved the flavor of this oatmeal with all the fruit. It's really no work at all beyond grating a bit of orange zest. The consistency did come out a bit soupy for me, so next time I'll reduce the liquid content, but I'll definitely be making it often!

 2. I love this oatmeal. I will admit to cooking it in the microwave (therefore decreased the amount of water). I used half old fashioned and half quick oats. I loved all the fruit and the thing I really liked was the orange zest. I usually flavor my oatmeal with spices or extracts. This was a really nice fresh change. I also really liked the addition of the milk powder. I can't stand the thought of making oatmeal with milk as I detest hot milk so really liked this alternative, which created a nice creamy product. I did 3/4 the recipe which was easily done. Thanks for a winner Toni!

 3. I thought this was a lovely breafast recipe. I left out the milk powder, and used about 1 1/2 cups of liquid, made up of half water and half skimmed milk. I used all the dried fruit and thought it was a really nice combination, and not too sweet.

 4. Oatmeal is something we usually have for breakfast 1 to 2 times per week and I always appreciate finding new and yummy ways to prepare it. I did not have the dried plum but did have the other ingredients. I increased the recipe to serve 2 and found that with all the dried fruit this was most definately substantial servings. I used a little less than 2 cups of water in the doubled recipe and added the dry milk powder at the end of cooking.

I come from a long line of wonderful cooks and doing my best to hold up that tradition. My great-grandparents owned a coffee shop; my Nana was also a great cook and started the tradition of baking around the holidays, both cookies and fruitcakes. After she died, now a decade ago, our family decided to continue in her honor. The picture above is my mother's (Chef Hot Pans) dining room table just before we packed up our Christmas cookie trays. More that 20 kinds of cookies, many of which are from 'Zaar recipes.

I myself am an amateur cook with a penchant for ethnic foods and spice. Currently reforming my menu in favor of healthy dishes lower in fat with lots of grains and vegetables.
