Super Tender Swiss Steak

"This makes in one pan. Start on the stovetop and finish in the oven. So tender you can cut it with a fork. Gravy is excellent over mashed potatoes or egg noodles. Revision: Thanks to 3 KillerB's for pointing out some corrections that needed to be made to this recipe."

  1. Great dish! I doubled the Italian seasonings and garlic. It didn't have as much sauce as I would have expected, but the taste was fantastic! Definitely something I'd make again.

  2. This was OK. My kids tasted it and wouldn't eat more, and they normally love anything with tomatoes. Thanks anyway!

  3. I made as posted. I drained the tomatoes and mushrooms thoroughly while I sauteed the onions and meat. The meat was tender. This is an excellent recipe for busy people. Thanks for sharing. Made for Everyday is a Holiday tag,

  4. This was a great one pot meal! I realised when I went to make it calls for canned mushrooms that you can drain and in Australia they are mostly pureed. That still worked well but obviously made the sauce a little thinner than it would have been, but the extra sauce was terrific soaked up with some mashed potato. Steak came out super tender and it's a recipe with plenty of scope for variations.

  5. I didn't have a gravy like in the photo. Maybe I should have done something for it, maybe add cornstarch. Maybe I should have drain the cans of tomatoes. I used fresh mushrooms. Maybe this made too much juices. I cooked it 1 hour and the meat was not tender like I thought it would be. My fault. Next time I'll check before. Thanks Sally :) Made for Zaar Star Game.

Tweaks

  1. This delicious recipe truly lives up to its name in tenderness. I could pierce it with my baby's plastic, safety fork. And the flavor was incredible. So rich! And yet lively and bright -- not heavy at all. I did it in a cast iron pan with a little olive oil for browning and substituted about 1 tsp of Kitchen Bouquet for the Worchestershire sauce because I'd run out.
