  1. In a large frying pan, melt butter and sauté onion until it begins to brown.
  2. Add cabbage and toss. Add spices, salt, sugar, and vinegar and toss. Add water.
  3. Cover pan and let simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add apples.
  4. Cover and continue cooking for about 20 minutes longer, until cabbage and apples are tender. Remove lid and taste; adjust sugar and spices to taste.
  5. Continue simmering uncovered to cook off all liquid in the bottom of the pan. Serve warm.
