  1. Preheat the oven to 450. In a very large nonstick skillet, heat the butter over moderate heat.
  2. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes or until tender.
  3. Add the sweet potatoes, apples, 2 tablespoons of the sugar and the lemon juice and cook until the sugar has melted.
  4. Add the broth, salt, and pepper and bring to a boil.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a 7 by 11 glass baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are tender.
  6. Uncover, sprinkle with the remaining sugar and bake for 10 more minutes or until lightly browned.
