Tater Tot Chicken Pie

"This has become a family favorite - I found this recipe on a bag of tater tots several years ago. This is very similiar to a Chicken Pot Pie with a Tater Tot topping instead of bread. It makes a great one dish meal with a salad and bread."

directions

  • Preheat oven to 375°.
  • In large skillet, cook onion and pressed garlic in butter or olive oil over medium high heat until onion is tender.
  • Add cooked chicken, frozen veggies, undiluted soup, milk, thyme and pepper.
  • Stir ingredients together and cook over medium heat until hot and bubbly. Stirring occasionally.
  • Cover and cook an additional 5 minutes; stirring frequently.
  • Spoon chicken mixture into ungreased 2-quart casserole dish.
  • Arrange frozen tater tots on top.
  • Bake 40 minutes or until bubbly and tater tots are slightly browned.
  • Note: This recipe easily doubles and you can make two. I freeze the extra one with the tater tots on top and then remove and thaw in fridge. Bake as directed above. Also, I sometimes add an extra can of soup and an extra 1/4 cup of milk for a thinner consistency. This would be a personal preference. Also, I add approximately 1/2 tsp of dried thyme and 1/2 tsp of black pepper for one casserole - adaptable to your taste.

  1. The recipe was super! I used only one can of cream of chicken and 1/2 cup of milk instead of 1/4 cup. I also put the filling mixture in a store bought frozen pie crust and baked it as the tater tot recipe called for, which made it that much more wonderful!

  2. This was a winner! I also doubled up on the cream of chicken soup and added only 1/4 cup of milk. I used the frozen mixed California vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower and carrots). After the 40 minutes, I turned the broiler on for a couple of minutes to crisp up the tater tots! End result was a very tasty supper! Thanks Sheri!

  3. I really didn't change anything except add a bit more milk because it was kind of thick. It was a nice change from the regular hamburger tater tot casserole.

  5. Doubled this recipe. Cooked Chicken (frozen), soup, onion and garlic in the crockpot on high this afternoon. This afternoon when the chicken was done shredded, I added the vegetables to the pot, mixed and then scooped into a 13*9 greased pan. Then I added 1/2 cup milk and mixed well. Last step was to top with tater tots. I will need to work on the spices but with the ease we will have again.

  2. I have made this recipe over and over again and we love it every time! We usually use tuna instead of chicken and it's great! I change it up with the "cream of" soups, sometimes we use cream of celery, mushroom or potato basically whatever we have on hand. This is definitely a regular at our house. I love the freezing tip, works great!

  3. This was very good. Instead of the frozen mixed vegetables I used fresh cut up carrots which I steamed for a little while and then some frozen corn. DH and I both really enjoyed it.

  4. I made this last night for supper. Unfortunately, we thought it was bland. I did use olive oil for frying instead of butter and used pearl onions from the freezer. I guess I'll just have to try again later.

  5. The kids liked this one!I added two cans of soup as well. I did not have a package of mixed veggies so I used a few peas, some corn, beans and some cooked fresh carrots instead. turned out great! Thanks Sheri!
