Tennessee Mountains Stack Cake

"This is a popular recipe around here.The layers stack on top of each other to make one cake.My grandmother use to put dried,cooked apples between the layers."

  • Cream butter and sugar well.
  • Add molasses,scraping cup to get it all out.
  • Add eggs,one at a time,beating well after each addition.
  • Sift dry ingredients together and add alternately with milk.
  • Spoon batter into six greased and floured round cake pans,spreading batter about 1/3 inch thick in each pan.
  • Bake about 15 mintues in 350 oven.
  • When cool,put thick applesauce between the layers,and stack them up and sprinkle the top with powdered sugar.

  1. This is exactly what my 79 yo mom used to get for special occasions on the family dairy farm in Buncombe county, NC! She had often spoken of how her mom made such a cake but not being so much a cook she resorted to packaged spice cake mix when I was a kid (and often spoke of the aplle layer cake her mom used to make with the dried apple layers). This was an awesome surprise to come across! I used dried apples which I simmered first to soften & then layered them with homemade apple butter between the layers of thin pancake-like cake. It was delicious & made her soooo happy! Thank you for a true Southern Heritage classic!
     
  2. I think the problem is that the amount of baking soda is meant to be 1/2 teaspoon and not 1/2 cup.
     
  3. This was the worst, something has got to be wrong in the recipe. Try another one
