Toasty Burgers

"This is another recipe that I've been making for years. I think it may have originally come from a pamphlet I picked up in a grocery store. This is a very, very easy recipe that I can make with ingredients I usually have on hand."

  • 4 slices bread (I use multi-grain)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 lb hamburger (I use ground round)
  • 12 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 14 teaspoon pepper
  • 12 teaspoon marjoram
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons steak sauce (I use A-1)

directions

  • Toast bread.
  • Grate onion using large holes on a grater.
  • Mix hamburger lightly with onion, garlic salt, pepper and marjoram.
  • Pat 1/4 of the hamburger evenly over each slice of toast, being careful to spread meat over the edges.
  • Broil, 4 inches from heat for 5- 7 minutes, or until meat is done to your liking.
  • Meanwhile, mix butter and steak sauce together.
  • Top burgers with sauce when serving.

  1. We love burgers and this was a great change of pace version. Loved the addition of marjoram. We cooked them to medium and they turned out very juicy. We will make these again, for sure. Thanks Kendra!!!
     
  2. This is a very simple, but flavorful recipe. I used toasted slices of French Bread for the base, and didn't have any marjoram on hand, so therefore omitted it. I like the tartness of the A-1 as a sauce, and felt that was a great finish for these little burgers. We served this with a simple tossed salad (and hubby added a few baked beans to his plate). Another easy, weeknight meal to add to my menus.

<p>Although I currently live just outside St. Louis, this was the 20th move my husband and I made in the 28 years (at the time of our move) of our marriage. Most of those moves occurred in my husband's 25 year career as a pilot in the Air Force. When he retired 7 years ago, he went to work for Boeing and we both thought we'd go back to Seattle and never move again. Boy were we wrong! But our eventual goal is to end up back in the northwest. I love to read, quilt, and collect cookbooks and recipes. Have I found the right website or what?&nbsp; Pet peeves include people who&nbsp;give low ratings but don't say&nbsp;why and people who rate recipes they haven't tried. <br />EDITED TO ADD ON Jan. 27, 2007: Well we're here! We made it back to Seattle after what I call The Move From H---! We had major problems on both ends of the move, but the worst things happened here. Less than two weeks after we moved into our new house in Bellevue, a storm blew through and sent two tree limbs through the roof! Our power was off for almost a week, so we ended up moving back into the hotel we thought we had left behind. But we're back in our house now and slowly but surely, it's beginning to feel like home. And on the sunny, warm days, we remember exactly why we've always loved Seattle so much! Our favorite restaurant (Jake O'Shaunesey's) is gone, so we'll have to spend lots of time eating out in search of a new one!</p>
