- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- 1 1⁄2 lbs ground turkey
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 teaspoons cumin seeds, toasted and ground
- 2 teaspoons oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 cup chili sauce, tomato based
- 2 cups monterey jack cheese, shredded
- 1 green pepper, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 jalapeno pepper, minced (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 6 onion hamburger buns
directions
- In a skillet, heat 1 tbsp of the oil over medium heat for 30 seconds. Add turkey and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to slow cooker stoneware. Drain and discard liquid from pan.
- Add remaining oil to pan. Add onions and cook, stirring until softened, about 3 minutes. Add garlic, cumin, oregano, salt and pepper and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add chili sauce and bring to a boil.
- Transfer mixture to slow cooker stoneware. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours, until mixture is hot and bubbly. Add cheese, peppers, Worcestershire sauce and paprika. Cover and cook on high for 20 minutes, until pepper is softened.
- Spoon over hot split onion buns and serve.
