directions

  • Slice bread about 1/2 inch thickness.
  • Butter one side of each slice of bread and lay the slices side by side.
  • Place a slice of cheese on each piece of bread.
  • Layer the sliced tomatoes and onions on one slice over the cheese.
  • Place the ham over the onions.
  • Sprinkle with granulated garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste.
  • Close with the other slice of bread with cheese and gently press down.
  • Butter the outside of the sandwich with remaining butter before placing on the cooking apparatus.
  • If you are using a frying pan or griddle, preheat to medium-high heat.
  • Place the prepared sandwich on the pan or griddle, then place a small plate on top of the sandwich and then add some weight to the plate (at least a 1 pound bag of legumes) so that the sandwich compacts while cooking.
  • Cook for about 4 minutes, then turn over and replace the plate and weight and continue to cook for another 3 to 4 minutes or until the cheese begins to ooze out of the sandwich.
  • If you are using a cheese sandwich grill or a George Foreman grill, then all you do is place the sandwich in the grill, close the cover and let cook until done.
  • Serve with some sliced dill pickles and a bowl of soup of your choice and a glass of wine if desired (red or white).

  1. Made these on homemade sourdough. Left out the ham because we're all vegetarians here. These are delicious, especially with a bit of Recipe #28774 on the side.

  2. I really liked this. A new twist on grilled cheese. Will make again thanks for posting
