  1. Cake:
  2. Cream together the shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste with food coloring and cocoa. Add to shortening mixture. Add salt and buttermilk to mixture. Next add flour, vanilla, vinegar and baking soda in that order. Mix.
  3. Bake cake 30 minutes at 350 in 2 8-inch round greased cake pans. Cool.
  4. Frosting:
  5. Cook flour and milk until thick, then cool. Cream together sugar, butter and vanilla till fluffy. Add to flour mixture. Spread frosting on cake.
