  • Dissolve sugar in lukewarm water. Sprinkle yeast over liquid and let rise in a warm place for about 10 minutes.
  • Add remaining ingredients except flour and baking powder. Sift flour and baking powder if desired (baking powder will add extra lightness to the bread).
  • Add flour mixture to liquid mixture bit by bit. Knead into a smooth dough. Place in a greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until double in bulk.
  • Punch down and let rise again till double in bulk.
  • Punch down again and shape into 4 loafs. Place into greased 8x4x3 inch loaf pans.
  • Cover and let rise till dough has raise over the top of pan.
  • Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes, until golden brown. When done, bread will sound hollow when tapped with finger.

  1. I don't understand how the yeast is suppost to live? If there is only 1 t. sugar and 4 t. salt won't the salt over take the sugar and kill the yeast? Also wouldn't you need more yeast? 2T for 4 loaves of bread seems small. I would love to try this recipe if anyone has any helpful hints. Thanks.
     
  2. This was ok. I had a problem with the amount. The dough is hard to work with because of the volume. I would have to work with the recipe to get the amount right for something we would be able to eat before it goes bad.
