Ingredients Nutrition

  • Basic dough
  • 6 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 12 teaspoon salt
  • 1 12 cups shortening
  • 3 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • Chocolate
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • Coconut
  • 13 cup shredded coconut
  • Fruit
  • 13 cup dates, raisins, currants, prunes, figs or 13 cup dried apricot, chopped
  • Nut
  • 13 cup almonds, pecans, peanuts, brazil nuts or 13 cup walnuts, finely chopped
  • Spice
  • 12 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 14 teaspoon nutmeg

Directions

  1. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together.
  2. Beat shortening and sugar together until fluffy.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla, and beat well.
  4. Combine mixtures and mix well.
  5. Divide dough into six portions.
  6. Leave one portion plain.
  7. Mix ingredients for one of the variations into each of the other portions.
  8. Shape each portion into a roll.
  9. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour.
  10. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  11. Slice dough very thin.
  12. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes.
