Emoji Melt-Down: Google Updates Its Burger Recipe
A cheesy controversy drips to a close.

The emoji is an emojionally-charged thing in the digital age. They represent the way we think and feel and act, but in pixel form. One change to an eyebrow or a side-eye glance and the pitchforks and torches come out (I’m looking at you, WhatsApp; give me back my melodramatic, Edvard Munch-style screaming emoji).
That’s why, after a brief and intense moment of controversy, Google has updated its cheeseburger emoji to match the needs of its users. You heard that right, the cheese has landed, and this time it has landed on top of the beef.
A debate over burger-building was initiated back in October after Google CEO Sundar Pichai responded to Twitter comments asking about the company’s decision to place the cheese on the bottom of the burger emoji, rather than on the top. While some holdouts, like The Sporkful’s Dan Pashman, claimed that the cheese-below-meat combo was actually better in terms of taste and “bottom bun soppage,” the majority of the internet seemed to believe that the cheese’s proper place is on top of the beef patty.
In the end, democracy won and the Android-using people will get their cheese-on-top burger. After all, when you throw that slice of cheese product on your burger, doesn’t it just make sense that it would coat the beef like a yellow blanket, catching fire as the corners inevitably drip down into the flames? That just doesn’t happen when the cheese is on the bottom!
The burger update (Android 8.1) will be available by the end of the year. You could even think of it as a holiday gift from Google.
