McBreaking! McDonald’s Goes McVegan

Fast food giant reportedly testing vegan burgers in Finland

Hold the McPhone, because McDonald’s is apparently hopping on the McVegan train.

According to a report from Finnish media company MTV (not to be confused with the American media company MTV) which was picked up by vegan lifestyle site Veggie Athletic, one McDonald’s location in Tampere, Finland is test-driving a vegan hamburger until the end of November. What could the company call this creation? Obviously, the McVegan.

Made from a soy base, the McVegan comes with regular buns and veggies, as well as an egg-free version of the company’s signature sauce, which in Finland is called “McFeast” sauce. The McVegan in Finland comes on the heels of the Veggie McSpice, a kidney bean burger with cumin and cayenne spices which was released in Norway in April.

Vegan food can be just as junky as regular junk food, with a wide-open market for lab-made comfort foods made from soy or gluten, which can be high in fat and carbohydrates. McDonald’s interest in plant-based alternatives come at a time when more and more meat-free products are seeking to replace traditional meals with claims of eco-friendliness, sustainability and health benefits.

Whether products like the McVegan will improve the fast food giant’s image as a purveyor of McJunk remains to be seen.
