A&w Chili Dog Copycat

"I haven't had an A&W chili dog for years, but from what I can remember, this tastes just like it. This is listed as one serving, but the sauce makes enough for about 10 servings unless you use more on your dog like I do. The sauce can be frozen for future use."

  1. We have an A&W rootbeer stand not far from us and these chili dogs tasted very close to what we remember. I used a package of ground round that was about 1 1/2 pounds so I added another 1/3 cup of water. Covered and let simmer for the 30 minutes and it was perfect. We just topped our dogs with the sauce and enjoyed them a lot. Cant wait for lunch tomorrow! Served with aHardDaysNight's Recipe #304182 #304182 and had an indoor picnic for supper. Thank you lazyme for posting this recipe. Made and reviewed for the cookathon.

  2. I strongly disagree with the statements of June, 2015 and really question the credentials the reviewer stated. I've made this recipe several times. The first time was for my family....wife, three adult daughters who all grew up where an A&W was located. I didn't tell them it was a copycat recipe - I just said it was a coney dog sauce I found on the internet. After the first couple of bites they started comparing notes and said it reminded them of the A&W coney dogs we used to get.

  3. Makes delicious chili dogs! We like to add mustard & chopped onions and Redhot sauce for that final touch. Great football watching & kid-friendly food! Thanks a bunch! ~Sue

  4. It’s very fast to make and requires little cleanup. I like it but it is for A&W family dining, so super mild. I added 3 times the chili pepper and about 4-5 tbls of tomato paste and it’s decent. It should be noted I’m not a spicy heat freak so it’s still just a mild/medium.

  5. FANTASTIC. Definitely different than regular old chili. Can't wait to serve it up tonight! Made for Football Pool week #6. THANKS for a keeper of a recipe.

Tweaks

  1. I used ground beef, not ground chuck since that's all I had @ the house. I followed the recipe for the sauce, except that I used a little more salt since my tomato paste was "no salt added." I wasn't able to simmer it for that long as it thickened up very fast! But my husband really enjoyed it; thanks so much for sharing!
