  1. Super recipe! I altered it a little bit to suit me and my family's tastes, which I do with almost all recipes. I omitted the dill and caraway, and added a tsp of chili pepper and two beef bullion cubes (because of the bullion cubes I didn't need to add any extra salt). I also omitted the sour cream (for dieting reasons mainly :), but served it on the side. I also added a beef shin (soup bone) for flavor. While I was browning the beef cubes I browned the shin bone in a frying pan in one tbsp of olive oil. Once I combined the browned beef cubes with the other ingredients in the main pot, I added the beef shin. After about 2 hours or so, I removed the shin bone and cut the meat up into little pieces and threw them back into the pot. I also added approx. 1 cup of water throughout the cooking process to make a nice gravy - it was still very thick, not runny at all! I was able to buy some sweet Hungarian Paprika at a gourmet food shop - yum! The house smelled sooo good! The next time I make this I'll probably cut the recipe in half. I ended up eating Goulash five times in one week! I suppose this is just a testament to how good it turned out! I tried it over egg noodles and over brown rice - personally I preferred the rice, but both ways tasted great. Thanks for an awesome recipe! This one's a keeper!

  2. Thank you, papergoddess, for suggesting this recipe to me in the RR forum! This goulash is excellent! All of those spices work perfectly together; nothing overpowers anything else. My paprika was the sweet Hungarian variety. I easily made this in the crockpot and I'll surely make this again!

  3. OH MY GOSH! That was absolutely delicious! My daughter who is six had a ball helping me measure everything. It smelled so good I could barely keep her away from the stove. It was very easy to make! The two and a half hour simmer time was great because I did not have the five o clock get dinner ready rush. My husband who grew up in South Africa on curry for dinner at least four times a week, and who has deffinatly missed it really enjoyed this. Even though it is not a curry, he said it reminded him of home. All of my children loved it, even the one who won't eat anything :)

  4. I had some chuck steaks and didn't know what to do with them. This was suggested, and since I've never made goulash before, it was fair game. I'm glad I did! I made it exactly by the recipe, except after browning the meat, I put it all in the crockpot. I cooked it on low for about 6 hours. The meat was tender, and the gravy was just right. The only change I might make next time is to add a pinch of red pepper to give it just a little kick. Otherwise, great!

  5. Hat's off to your mom! This was wonderful! I didn't think I was going to able to wait until it got done. The only thing I changed was I left off the salt. I felt like all the spices complimented each other, not one over powering the other. Since it has a sweet taste too I'm going to try it on the grandgirls, when it comes to beef they only like hamburger. I served over hot buttered noodles, corn on the cob, and side salad. YUM! Will pass this one on it's great! Thanks for sharing!

I hate to bake (almost as much as I hate to vacuum!), and I'll go to great lengths to avoid having to make cookies.
