Best Wheat Bread

"Oh, the way your house smells when baking homemade bread!!! I got this recipe from a church friend who has 9 children. I scaled it down for my family. I bake bread twice a week. So much better than store bought."

  1. This was SO delicious! Just made this last evening. DH sat up & ate a bunch before bed! <LOL> I followed the recipe exactly, but ended up adding a total of 12-13 c. of flour total. Made four lovely loaves! Thanks for sharing! This is a really hearty, filling bread (probably due to the oatmeal). Looking forward to using this for toast this morning! Thanks for sharing!

  2. I've tried many wheat bread recipes, and this has to be the best. I used Splenda in place of sugar, used a bit more wheat flour than white, and added a couple tbsp. of flax seed. I kept in mind the review from "Lironah" and added the salt near the end. This is a keeper!

  3. This recipe tasted very good, but it didn't rise. Next time I will not add the salt and the yeast in the same step - apparently this can kill the yeast. I also had trouble with my first batch not cooking in the middle, but I'm pretty sure that's because my oven isn't heating properly. The second batch I baked hotter and it was fine.

  4. The bread was very good and very flavorful, however, I had to add more flour than what was called for and it didn't rise high enough. I found out that the yeast did not activate properly because of how I did the liquids. Next time, I will heat all the liquids, the sugar, and the salt together to about 120-130 degrees and then add the yeast and let it sit for five minutes.

  5. This is one of those "WOW recipes! I got 4 beautiful loaves, just bursting with great flavor ... Soooo good! We were right in the middle of a snow storm, so there was lots of humidity ... Needed more flour than called for, but, that's to be expected. I added another cup of white and another cup of wheat, plus the little bit I sprinkled on the dough as I kneaded. Came out lovely, and I surely thank you for sharing, Dolly ... Tis wonderful bread, indeed! Laudee
