Boiled and Roast Ham

"I use a boil and roast method which makes the ham really succulent and tender. This recipe works equally well served hot with roast potatoes, cauliflower-cheese, braised leeks and Duke of Cumberland sauce, or cold with salad etc and yes it makes great ham sandwiches with good bread and english mustard."

directions

  • First bring a large pan of water to the boil there should be enough water to cover the ham and the pan should be big enough so that the ham does not touch the sides.
  • Lower the ham into the boiling water and reduce the heat to a simmer with just occasional bubbles breaking the surface (unless the ham is very salty there should be no need to skim the scum from the top).
  • The ham should be cooked for 15 minutes to the pound.
  • If you need to top up the water to keep the ham covered, use boling water.
  • Meanwhile preheat the oven to 200C (hot, place in it an open roasting tin lined with foil'coz the honey really bakes on) with 4 tablespoons of oil and prepare a mixture of 2 tablespoons of honey to 2 teaspoons of wholegrain mustard.
  • Remove the ham from the boiling pan and drain it.
  • Remove any skin and score the fat underneath into diamond shapes with a sharp knife.
  • Stud each diamond with a whole clove pushed through the fat.
  • Spread the honey-mustard mixture over the ham and place into the roasting tin.
  • Bake for 5 minutes the pound or for a maximum of half an hour, basting every 10 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and leave for 10 minutes to set before carving or leave to cool before wrapping in foil or clingfilm.

  1. I am re reviewing this recipe as I liked it so much last time I thought I would try it again using smoked ham. Again I would say use half the cloves ( but thats prob my taste), but overall this has to be the best and easiest way to cook ham .And oh so tender. Thats why I now rate it, higher than last time.

  2. I got lots of praise for this pork at Tgiving this year. I actually did steps 1-9 the night before, refrigerated it, and baked it Tgiving morning. My baking time was therefore longer (I went by the thermometer), and it was baked in a fan oven, so I put a tent over it, but the drippings for basting got pretty dark and made the pork look quite dark (though not unattractive). (See photo; ham is in a sea of cranberry sauce.) I would like to try this again, next time exactly as Andy writes it. His quantities were perfect for a 3 lb ham.

  3. I don't know why many more don't use the boil & bake!! My grandma *miss her sweet lovely soul!* She taught this method to me in the 80's where I was then starting my own family. The only thing she taught differently was in the boiling. Where she, myself & now daughter too boil the ham in two liters of 7-up never water. I don't know the chemistry in this, but it sure makes for a mouth watering ham and the best part is that you can clearly see "outsiders/guests" like it, simply in that they go back for seconds! Ya know out of kind nature some will say they like something where in truth they truly don't???? ok come on we all have told this "white lie, I'm 99.9% sure lol... well this hasn't yet been the case where the ham is boiled in 7-up first as of yet anyways. We boil it for about idk 30 mins boiled while pot is covered. Then slow bake at 325 for idk maybe 5 mins per lb. We put some of the boiled in a shallow roasting pan to barley meet the ham where it rests on a rack cloves use is varied some like more others less... I usually go somewhere in-between lol the last 5-10 mins uncover and use butter, pineapple juice from a fresh pineapple or sliced can works too and brown sugar put on the glaze hang the slices of pineapple on the cloves rounds out the last minutes of baking. I'm making one today New Year 2024 cuz maybe the change from traditional news years day meal will bring the ideal betterment for us all this YEAR worth a try in my mind anyways! Simply because where there is the shared 2¢ by us all coming together the combination truly creates a profound difference in where we equal! Peace ?????? it doesn't matter if you like it or not it's just wise to accept the facts where they are given no one will ever have the ability to survive life alive give back all you've been given where it's done the same together in stride we have the enough where no one is left to be struggling fighting for survival we together we all can thrive. Life isn't about me nor you our own where yes we have our own opinions and DESIRES we can and I think just should set those aside and give more to others I imagine in doing so we could actually change our efforts to become effortless too. Because at the end of the day we rest in peace by having love. Love isn't about liking or not Love is genuinely nothing more than RESPECT. THE MORE YOU GIVE IT THE MORE YOU GAIN IT! RESPECT COMES FROM THE GAIN WHERE TWO OR MORE HOLD A MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING WHERE TOGETHER THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO CREATE THE WAY TO ATTAIN AND FULFILL THE PURPOSE . THE KEY IS COMMUNICATION WHERE THE TOLD MUST BE IN FULL TRUTH OF WHAT ONE HOLDS. NOT MERELY A PART THAT LEADS TO DECEPTION... Again no one owns their own life that's foolishness taught by the way of the fool. We all live in one life where we to all will die. We all are a mere factor that holds an equal role in the way of change. Where our only choice is in our reaction to the given. To say if I can do it so can you is just being ignorant to where the factors are different! There are sooooo many too! right Accompanies wrong naturally by design life is rAw by Nature. In the center "A" each side right and wrong are dependent upon the other where both fulfill one purpose. The horizontal line is where they joined forces to do so. It's accepting the difference where it takes one that gives adds the real value. We are unique some similar some the contrary! None are lessor! Misunderstanding creates life to be a battle where the change lies in the given changing rAw to become WaR no one really wins.... Because even if you get it all then what? One becomes alone eventually lonely with no purpose you wait wither and die that's just senseless really! , I simply want to say and I will.... Give it up pup we can be better! Give so life can be lived in peace & harmony which in my mind sounds like HEAVEN. Think about it please thanks my friend
