Bushwacker

"Every island in the Caribbean has its own "special" drink, and here in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, it is the "Bushwacker." Every bartender on island knows how to make them, and there are some variations, but this is the standard recipe. Tastes just like a chocolate milkshake...but be careful! It ain't no milkshake! Ever heard of a "virgin" drink? A "virgin" Bushwacker is a glass of ICE!! Haha! Multiply ingredients by the number of drinks you want. This recipe will make one drink."

ingredients

  • 12 ounce rum (Cruzan is the best, but use whatever brand you have)
  • 12 ounce vodka (any brand)
  • 12 ounce Baileys Irish Cream (or a similar off-brand name)
  • 12 ounce Kahlua (or a coffee flavored off-brand name)
  • 12 ounce amaretto liqueur (any brand)
  • 12 ounce chococo chocolate-flavored liqueur
  • 12 ounce Frangelico (I recommend it) (optional)
  • 12 ounce creme de coconut (a MUST - "Coco Lopez" is best)
  • 1 cup crushed ice (more or less to make the proper consistency)
  • 3 dashes of grated nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon whipped cream
  • 1 maraschino cherry

directions

  • Put everything, except nutmeg, whipped cream and cherries in a blender and use enough ice that when blended will be the consistency of a milkshake.
  • Blend, pour into glasses, and top with whipped cream, a cherry, and a couple dashes of grated nutmeg.
  • Enjoy!
  • But use caution!
  • They taste like there is no alcohol in them and most people have a tendency to get"bushwacked!"

The first time I [barely] remember having these was on a teeny little island off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico called Culebra, where my boyfriend and I were the only people camping on Playa Flamenco in March, because the locals thought it was "cold". This drink is seriously the most lusciously perfect Caribbean-style way to get over your sunburn and get drunk. They're just delicious and it's no joke when people say to be careful - you would think this is just an innocent milkshake with no ulterior motives, but have a few and you will be knocked on your a$$ before you know it, trust me! When we got home, and I started to scour the internet for the recipe, I kept finding all these fruity so-called "Bushwhacker" concoctions from Florida bartender. Fruit??? Um, not in my bushwhacker! Anyway, I eventually figured it out (and it happens to be this exact same recipe!) and have them fairly regularly at home now. I tried to convince my favorite bar to do them as a special, but they wouldn't, because there is a policy against having more than 4 types of booze in any one drink. Lightweights! :-P Thankfully the Caribbean has no such concerns. Next I'm going to try to convince my local coffee folks to make a non-alcoholic iced coffee version with all those Torani syrups. I know, not as fun, but a better choice for a summer commute. Salud!
     
  2. My husband and I recently went to saint Thomas and had these. We only had 2 a piece and let me tell you, we weren't able to walk a straight line. Boy o boy were they great!
     
  3. I had this drink while on a cruise in Alaska and I was hooked. This became my regular evening treat while on the ship. So delicious! It's like an Adult Milkshake. This recipe is perfect except Nutmeg is not needed.

  5. Dude I am soo happy that you posted this drink. We went to the Virgin Islands last year and I was hooked on this drink. I was soo sad when I came home and no one knew how to make it. YOU ROCK!! THis is the best drink ever!! I just wish that the liquor was as cheap here as it is there!!

  1. I was a bartender in the early 90's at The Bridge Bar and Restaurant. We served, hands down, the best bushwhackers on the island. (Rated by customers) Have not found 1 recipe that is even close to what we used. For them to come out the best you must use specific brands and follow instructions perfectly. Ingredients: 1 oz. Dark cruzan rum 1 oz.light cruzan rum 1/2 oz. Absolut vodka 1 oz. Bols white creme de Cacoa Liqeurs: 1 oz. Kahlua (original) 1 oz. Bailey's Irish Creme (original) 1/2 oz. Disaronno Amaretto 1/2 to 1 oz. Coco Lopez (desired consistency) In top of the line blender(preferably bar and restaurant quality) Add 4 cups ice. Add all grain alcohols, add liqueurs and blend well. Add additional ice, if needed. Add coco lopez gradually until desired creaminess is reached. Makes 2 to 3 depending on glass size... Pour in desired glass and Enjoy. You can add whipped cream or chocolate drizzle but it's not needed. Trust me.
