  1. I made these for my husband to take to work for a pre-Thanksgiving pot luck. Major hit...glad I didn't 'keep it simple, and just make beans' as he asked. They went so fast that they were gone before he got to them, and I made a BIG batch! I DOUBLED the recipe and made a couple of small changes; I didn't double the ground beef, using 1 1/2 lbs total. I browned the ground beef in the bacon fat, (Had to take off my *Food Police* hat for that one!) adding the onion and about 1/2 tsp garlic powder half way to done. Then I drained any extra fat before adding it to the rest of the recipe. I used 9 slices bacon and 1 cup of brown sugar-it was plenty sweet. I also added a can of tomato sauce and a can of drained black beans for more color. Also, a teaspoon of Liquid Smoke gave a nice touch of flavor. I drained all beans except the pork and beans. I saved the liquid from the kidney beans in case it got too dry while baking, but I didn't need it. This recipe is a keeper for many reasons; it's quick, economical, looks pretty and best of all, tastes great! Thanks Jen.

  2. This recipe is awesome! I put all the ingredients in the crockpot and set it on low for 3 hours. My husband is a huge fan of baked beans and said these are the best he has ever tasted.

  3. Absolutely wonderful! My Mom used to make these, and I lost her recipe. These are just like hers! Didn't have butter beans, so I used white kidney along with the red kidney beans. It doesn't matter really. These would be great with any kind of beans!

  4. This is a great base recipe. The flavor is fantastic but I didn't like the original proportions. I grew up with calico beans being beans with some meat thrown in, but this recipe was more like hamburger with a few beans thrown in. I ended up doubling all the beans that were used, and to compensate I used about 1.5x the amount of flavorings that were called for. Except for the vinegar. I really don't love vinegar so I left that at 2 tsp. I also used a full pack of bacon. And then cooked it all in the same skillet. Cooked the bacon, set it aside and drained the pan, cooked the beef, drained it again, then threw everything together and cooked over medium-low heat for 30-40 minutes. It tasted wonderful.

  5. Yet another 5 star recipe!!! What a crowd pleaser this one is! I make this for most of my outdoor summer/fall events. I like to add black beans and green beans plus a little liquid smoke with maybe some BBQ sauce...don't mean to change the recipe on you but the basics are very good here too...just personal preference! (I also add sausage or sometimes use just sausage)<br/>Thank you Jen for posting!

Tweaks

  1. 28 oz can of Bushes Best baked beans, added 1/2 c water, more bacon, no salt (but used salt and pepper when cooking ground beef and onions).

  2. Wicked good beans! Personal preferences took over the recipe in a few ways (don't they always?)! I cut the sugar to 1/2 cup and still find them sweet. I used about 3/4lb. of ground beef, subbed black beans for kidney beans because I don't like the latter and added another can of white beans to stretch out the batch. Used the slow cooker and made them a day ahead of time since many reviewers of this and other recipes said they're better the next day. They're soooo good now it's hard to imagine them better! Thanks Jen!

  3. These were outstanding! Awesome flavor and my DH said he could of ate the whole thing. I did change one thing and that was I used a can of pinto beans in place of the pork and beans. Thanks so much for sharing your Aunt's recipe :) Its a keeper for sure!

  4. This was great! I just made it again, but this time I substituted smoked sausage for the hamburger meat. I also added some crushed red pepper flakes and a bit of cumin, and a little garlic. Yum-o!!

  5. Doubled the recipe to take to a pot luck. Only change I made was to substitute white beans for the butter beans. The beans were a hit. None left to take home. DH requested I make this for him very soon. Thanks for the great recipe!
