Cheese Frenchee

"Petite deep fried cheese sandwiches that were served in the King's Food Host restaurants in Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska. I got this recipe from a friend of mine who worked at King's in the 1960's."

  • Deep fry at 375°F until golden brown.

Questions & Replies

  1. Has anybody tried these in an air fryer? Curious if that would work, or if the egg mixture would run off before it 'fried'.

  1. I love Cheese Frenchees! My dad owned two King's Food Host Restaurants. Every Saturday I would go to work with him, do a couple couple of chores and then get paid with a plate of Cheese Frenchees. For many years later my mom would make these as a treat on New Year's Eve for our family. The original recipe used Miracle Whip rather than Mayonnaise to give it a slightly sweet taste. They would spread the Miracle Whip on the bread and place the American Cheese between the slices, cut off the crust and cut into quarters. Then these would be placed in an airtight container and refrigerated over night.

  2. This was one of my favorite treats from when I was a kid! Going to King's back in the day, was an event. I have made these Cheese Frenchee's and they are as good as I remember. Gooey Cheesy yumminess inside a crunchy crust. These are even better with a slice of ham between the cheese slices, and Velveeta cheese slices are even better than American Cheese IMO, but really you can use any cheese you want. Also, day old bread holds up a little better in the fryer.

  3. I've done a lot research on the frenchee. It's the only time I'll ever say it... You need miracle whip and wonder bread. I hate both of them, but they make the perfect cheese frenchee.

  4. Great!

  5. Excellent... I did however prefer and used Velveta... ohhh sooo good...

Tweaks

  1. It is messy but if you freeze the sandwich before you deep fat fry it , it helps + you can make a few and have the rest ready to fry later.

  2. Mmmm.... all that's needed is a recipe for King's onion rings. Some versions of this recipe substitute Miracle Whip for mayo, and crushed saltines for the corn flakes.
