Chicago Public School Cafeteria Butter Cookies

"I used to love the butter cookies they sold in my high school cafeteria. I've been looking for the recipe and this comes very close (if my poor old memory serves me right). These might be a little more tender than the CPS butter cookies but they're close enough for me!"

  1. This recipe was pretty close to the cps butter cookies but missing a few important ingredients, 4 cups all purpose flour sifted, 1 3/4 cups powered sugar, 1/4 cup graduated sugar,4 sticks butter softed, 1 Tbs almond extract, Do not substitute ingredients!!!!!! Best butter lunchroom cookies ever!!!!!!

  2. Just finished baking the Butter Cookies, and they were very good! They tasted like the homemade cookies we had for lunch at Hampton jr. high in Detroit Michigan

  3. The first time I tried these I used margarine instead of butter and Splenda instead of sugar. You don't want to know how terrible they were. They were like little lumps of stuff. If you threw them at a window, it would bust for sure. It was bad!!<br/>The second, third, fourth and on and on times I made them, I followed the recipe to the "t" and how amazing it was that they tasted like the ones at good ole' Hubbard H.S. in Chicago!!

  5. I have been looking for this recipe for years. It has been close to 20 years since I have had these good cookies. I am going to make them tonight and then write another review on what I thought about them. If anyone is from the Chicago area, there was a school name Terrell Elementary close to 55th and State and their cookies were delicious. It has been a long time since any schools have made these cookies, so I hope that they taste as delicious as all the others have stated. Thanks again for putting this recipe on here, now I can make these cookies with my children and they can continue on with theirs for years to come. OMG!!! They are great, they taste just like the ones in the school and I am glad that you were able to put that recipe on here, thank you, my kids love them too!!!!

Tweaks

  1. I searched for years to find this recipe we also had the same butter cookie in the Denver public school system in the 80s I couldn't just get it right three or four times then finally I added cornstarch as almond extract to the recipe and they were spot-on
