Cocoa Drop Cookies

"My mom made these when I was a kid and we all loved them. They're good plain, or with a simple powdered sugar icing on top. They are really great with a cold glass of milk!!"

  1. I have the Betty Crocker's cooky book from 1963 and was looking at this recipe. I was undecided if I should make it. Searched for it here and saw the good reviews and decided to give it a whirl. I am so glad I did! These are great cookies! I used the butter flavored Crisco sticks. Subbed about 3 TBS of butter and I only had 1/2 c of white sugar so I added 1/2 c of brown. Not sure how different this made the flavor, but they were great!<br/>I frosted them with a mocha buttercream frosting and chopped pecans. Thanks for posting!

  2. I also grew up with my mom making these cookies every holiday. She got it from the Betty Crocker cookbook which she still has although it's seen it better days. I always include these cookies in my holiday baking. My mom uses brown butter icing and walnuts. They are a great cookie and we will continue to make them for years to come.

  3. I grew up with this recipe handed down in family by hand. Blown away to see it anywhere but our family; never even seen in Betty Crocker as was previously mentioned!!! However, we add raisins & some in family add chopped nuts as well. The raisins really add a moistness to them, even with our dipping them in a glass of milk. They generally baked in 8 minutes, & froze well. Xmas is not the same without baking these; always a fave in gift giving treats.

  4. These were great cookies. I raised the amount of cookies to 36 and got 42 when done. Used a Pampered Chef 18/8 scoop. Didn't need any adjustments since I cook at a high altitude. Baking time was 11 minutes. This recipe is a keeper.

  5. These are even better the day after you bake them. They really are like a brownie! I topped each one with a peppermint Hershey's Hug to make it festive. These were a resounding hit and I'll be making them again. I needed to bake them for 11 minutes.

FYI...I used to be Earnhardt#3 on Zaar, so I'm not a newbie!! This picture is of me and hubby in Hollywood in August of 2006. If you really look, you can see the sign waaaayyy back there behind us! Don't I look like a star in my shades?? ;) I live in a town of about 1500 and work at an insurance office here in town. I am married with a 13 year old daughter, a 32 year old stepson and, as of Dec 11, 04, a daughter in law. They now have a one year old daughter, Natalie. She's a sweetie! I love NASCAR!! Root for Tony Stewart. Ya I know, alot of people don't like him, but love the bad boy attitude!! We go to a couple of races a year; love it!! I confess...I'm a redneck!!! I like to read, cross-stitch and I love to cook when the weather turns cool. I love music, mainly country and classic rock. I love to sing, too, but nobody else would enjoy it, so I keep that to myself!! I love to go out with girlfriends, have a few drinks and dance the night away. I like to ride my bike and walk when the weather is warm. I love the outdoors and would rather work in the yard anytime than in the house. My daughter plays on a traveling softball team in the summer, so that keeps us busy about every weekend. Actually, they practice most of the year, so we're never too far from a softball field!! She also plays softball at school, so we go from one team to the next! I love it and will miss it when she's too old to play! She pitches and plays 1st base. Her new coach is going to try her at third this year, so that will be something new for her. I LOVE any kind of animal, especially dogs, and am very concerned about animal welfare, especially Greyhound rescue. The retired racers go through so much and are so appreciative when they finally get to go home with someone! If I had the time & the cash, I would run away to a tropical island. There's nothing better than swaying palm trees, balmy breezes and turquoise water. I love to wake up in the morning and hear the waves crashing. A cold margarita isn't a bad addition, either! I LOVE dogs; I have really grown to love Greyhounds; what personality!! We adopted Missileman on May 15, 2006; a great birthday gift for me!! He is a retired racer, but now seems happy just to be a dog! We also have a 5 year old yellow cat, Drew. A real troublemaker! We also have a 5 year old Black Lab named Angus. He is actually my stepson's dog, but it seems we're his permanent family! We also have an adopted fur baby, Tanner. He actually belongs to the neighbor, but he loves us and visits everytime he escapes!! There are three things I want to do before I die (well, more than 3, I'm sure, but...) I want to visit Hawaii and Australia and I want to swim with dolphins. My pet peeves are two faced, backstabbing people. And, people who only want to be a friend when you can do something for them. Those people may as well stay away from me; life's too short to deal with 'em!! I've "met" alot of interesting people here at Zaar and can't wait to see what's going on every morning when I log in!! I've been in a few swaps over the last year and had a great time!! I appreciate everybody who organizes them; it's alot of work!!
