Update~ used half butter/half bacon drippings & a bag of Gala apples to make the most delicious fried apples for cast iron skillett apple pie! I would give more stars if possible! Old review~ Used regular apples (what I had on hand) rather than tart, I'm assuming that's why the bacon taste was overwhelming the sweet/spicy taste. Added pecans, more brown sugar, butter, some cinnamon and cranberries and used it as stuffing for acorn squash- for a sweet but hearty tasting filling. (Was pretty good!) Next time, I'll use a touch of bacon drippings but mostly butter so the bacon taste doesn't overwhelm.

These were pretty darn close to Cracker Barrel fried apples. I always buy a few jars of those whenever I am at CB. Although it took longer than 15 minutes to cook until tender, maybe I didnt slice the apples thin enough, they were very easy to make and delicious as a side dish to the spicy pork chops I fixed last nite. I'll make these again.
