Creamsicle Freeze

"EXACTLY like the Orange Julius in the mall, without the stomach curdling mixture of acidic orange juice and milk/ice cream.... I also included variations including different fruit, like PEACHES & CREAM, STRAWBERRIES & CREAM, etc. I tried for years to figure out this recipe, beginning at around age 12! I finally got it one day at age 25 and now my 11 year old daughter whips them up for herself and friends after school or for breakfast."

  • 1 cup water

directions

  • Add all ingredients into blender and blend on high until no ice chunks are left.
  • (My blender makes a god-awful racket, then sound changes once no ice chunks are left) Makes about (2) tall glasses.
  • *I don't recommend replacing the powdered creamer with milk, as the acid in the orange juice will curdle the milk!
  • Powdered milk may be used in emergency!
  • **STRAWBERRIES& CREAM VERSION: Replace orange juice with strawberries (or even any kind of berry).
  • ***PEACHES& CREAM: Replace orange juice with canned or fresh peaches.
  • ****Add vodka for a tasty, refreshing cocktail on a hot summer evening!
  • Be creative!
  • There are so many ways to change this recipe to make the most delicious frozen drink that kids & adults will love!

  1. Our family loves Orange Julius and this recipe comes as close as any version we have tried. But about a month after trying this recipe the first time, my daughter & I went to the Orange Julius in the mall and observed them using half water and half Sprite as they mixed our drinks. We went home and tried the same thing with this recipe and the results were wonderful! With the Sprite in it we couldn't tell the difference between our version and the mall drink.

  2. I was really shocked - I figured it would be a close call, but it does taste JUST like Orange Julius! I moved to a small town when I married and haven't had one for 3 years... I am so thrilled. Thanks!

  3. I substituted 2 c. strawberries. I had no vanilla on hand, but I did have and used 2 Tbsp. fat-free, French vanilla coffee creamer. Stil used the 1/2 c. sugar, 1 c. water and 15 ice cubes. So simple and delicous. Our favorite soothie. Thankyou.

  4. This was wonderful! I've tried other copycats of the Orange Julius and they weren't close but this one is woderful and DD said it was better than the ones at the Mall. Not too sweet. I can't wait to try the strawberry one:) Thank you for posting! I have since tried this with Splenda and several of the kids prefer it that way.

Tweaks

  1. This was too sweet for my taste so next I'll use half the amount of sugar. Besides it being too sweet the flavour is really really good. I think frozen strawberries or a banana would also be really good in here. Most smoothy recipes have milk, ice cream, or yogurt as base ingredient and I like how this doesn't. Thanks for the recipe!----------- Update: This is one of my most favourite recipes!! I add less sugar and sometimes replace some of the ice cubes with frozen raspberries. I also don't add as much water. Sometimes I don't even measure, just throw the whole this into the blender (or if I am making just one, into the magic bullet). Since I have reduced the amount of sugar I haven't really found any other smoothy that is healthier or better tasting then this!!!

  2. this was yummy! we've tried this several ways now. the first time we followed the recipe (including the orange) and it was excellent! we tried again without the orange and it was still very good but we did miss that added flavor boost. third time, i was out of vanilla so substituted rum flavoring--it was AMAZING! since then, we've made a zillion variations for a variety of people and all have turned out great. i really think the creamer is the secret to making these drinks shine. we discovered that cheap juices will work but don't produce as much flavor so are best used when using fruit as well. we didn't care for eliminating the sugar but cutting it to 1/4 cup worked out fine. also, recommend the suggestion from bkj about substituting sprite for 1/2 the water. we loved making these with coconut rum!

  3. I don't feel right rating your recipe since I took such liberties with it. I didn't have powdered so I used liquid non-dairy creamer & omitted the water. I also had to use strawberry kiwi V8 Splash instead of OJ & I threw in a few frozen berries with the ice cubes. The rusult was a wonderful frozen strawberry cream. Thank you for listing the basic ingredients & the proportions! That part gets 5 stars!
