directions

  • In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink and drain. Personally I keep frozen cooked hamburger in my freezer which makes this an even quicker recipe for me to put together.
  • In a crock pot, combine potatoes, carrots, water, onion soup mix, garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, garlic powder and pepper.
  • Stir in the cooked beef.
  • Cover and cook on high for 4 to 5 hours.
  • Stir in tomato soup and tomato paste.
  • Cover and cook for 1 hour longer or until heated through.

Questions & Replies

  1. If ground beef is frozen can u just add it to the slow cooker or still cook first?

  2. can you make stew with out a slow cooker?

  3. Any problem doing this on low for 8-10 hours?

  4. Oops. I made a mistake here. Crockpot on and I’m heading to work. I added the tomato soup and paste with everything else right from the start. Was supposed to wait until it cooked for 4-5 hours before adding. Do you think this will cause a problem. Thanks.

  1. I made this today & it is gone already! I cut back on the tomato paste & condensed soup, as we do not like "tomato-ey" stews. I also added some beef stock and later added some macaroni. I did pre-boil my carrots so that they would be more tender. I made seasoned meatballs with the ground beef and fried them a bit prior to mixing it all in the slow cooker. Delicious & easy. Thank you for posting.

  2. A great tasting, easy to make stew/soup. I replaced the tomato soup and paste with a good tomato sauce because I'm not a tomato soup fan. I cooked the first step for 4 1/2 hrs on high and the second for 2 1/4 hrs still on high. The potatoes were firm but well cooked and tender the carrots were still *quite* firm and I used small baby carrots cut in half. I think I'll pre-cook them a bit next time so they will be a bit more tender. DH loved the flavor. I made a 1/2 recipe and I would say that it made 4 servings even though DH and I aren't big portion eaters. If you have men with hearty appetites or teens allow for that. Thanks Bonette, I love your crock pot dishes :D.

  3. We really liked it! I increased the meat by substituting the ground beef with 3/4 lb. ground turkey and 3/4 lb. ground sirloin to keep it lower in fat. I combined everything and cooked it on low for 10 hours and it came out wonderful. I served this with crescent rolls and a jello salad. This is a great family meal - perfect for weeknights. I will definitely be making again during the cold winter months. Made for Please Review My Recipe tag.

  4. Hey! I made this delicious soup yesterday for my family, but I made MORE. I used a little more garlic (3 cloves instead of just 1), and added 3/4 of a yellow onion sliced as fine as I could get it, 2 stalks of celery sliced thin too, about 1/2 c. fresh diced parsley, 1 c. baby bella mushrooms sliced, and substituted a can of diced tomatoes for the tomato soup, and garlic salt rather than garlic powder. Also, I didn't put any Italian seasoning.. we just had run out I guess. I thought some zucchini might also go well with the beefy, tomato-y flavors. Thanks for this wonderful recipe!

  5. yummy and easy makes for a perfect dinner! I liked how easy this goes together and how it really is a sort of comfort food without being high in fat. I was concerned it was going to have a tomato-y tasting meal, (not being real fond of tomatoes) but with the soup it's a subtle taste and it blends well with the onion soup mix. I doubled the recipe for my crew (6 kids, 5 of them boys! lol) and we had a little leftover for dad's lunch.

Tweaks

  1. Instead of the canned tomato soup, I used hot and spicy v8 juice. So much more flavor

  2. My mom and I have been making this for years except we call it "Hamburger Soup" (which throws people off sometimes LOL). But we use: 1 lb ground beef 1 28 oz can Veg-All Country Style 1 14 oz can Veg-All regular 1 28 oz can Crushed Tomatoes 3 medium potatoes diced into bite sizes 1/2 cup frozen corn Cook potatoes until 1/2 done, then add browned meat and all the other ingredients (don't drain the water from the potatoes as this will cut some of the acid from the tomatoes). Simmer for 30 min. I usually top with some crushed rosemary when there's about 10 min left. Add in some Trappy's Hot sauce for a lil kick when putting into a bowl.

  3. I used tomato bisque instead of canned tomato soup. I also used two bags of Lipton onion soup mix. It turned out so yummy! I’m thinking next time I’ll add peas. And corn and take the potatoes out. And instead make mashed potatoes and pour this over it.

  4. This was really good and so easy. I made a couple of changes because of what I had on hand: dried onions instead of the soup mix and I added a soup can of water along with the tomato soup and omitted the tomato paste. It needed a little salt added right before you eat, but it was very very good!

  5. We really enjoy this recipe. It's so good and so easy. I've used stew beef in place of ground beef, bottled garlic, reduced sodium tomato soup and omitted the italian seasoning. If the tomato taste is too strong, I throw in 1-2 beef bouillon cubes. It always turns out great. I think this could easily become a vegetable beef soup by omitting the potatoes and carrots and adding a couple cups of mixed frozen vegetables. Thanks so much for sharing. It is much appreciated.

I have two boys Eddie 18 and Brandon 10. I have been with my hubby for 16 years. I work full time outside the home and my boys keep me busy at home. Eddie is a singer and base guitar player in a band and Brandon races go karts. We also have a Collie/Beagle mix named Sugar. I love to cook and try out new recipes. My family likes it too but at times ask my to make just "normal" food, as I forget sometimes to make my own TNT recipes. I cook a lot with with my crock pot as it makes life a lot easier for me. I am always on the look out for new crock pot recipes. I'm not much of a baker as I don't like to measure things. I collect cookbooks and recipes in general. I usually start with a recipe and tweak to my families liking. My Rating System: 5 Stars = The whole family enjoyed the dish and it will be added to my TNT cookbook. Book #220911. These recipes will be made again and again. 4 Stars = Recipe was good, but needed some modifications or it was good but not something we would want on a regular basis. Also goes into my TNT-4 star recipe cookbook. Book #220912 3 Stars = It was edible, but won't be made again. 2 Stars = Needs some kind of major adjustments. 1 Stars = Inedible, didn't work, waste of ingredients.
