Questions & Replies

  1. Hi I'm planning on making this Death by Chocolate recipe. however I have hit a snag. I'm in Australia and am unable to source any Skor bars or the other in time for when this is needed. would anyone know what I could substitute in Australia that want greatly alter the taste please. Someone suggested on another site Toblerone but that is chocolate and nougat I thought. would this be compatible as the pieces are very small. Any advice appreciated greatly thank you

Reviews

  1. I love this recipe. Used Brownie mix (intead of choc. cake) and 2 pkgs of choc mousse. This was so darn delicious! Women were fighting over the last piece! (Pleaaase!)

  2. Excellent recipe! I made this for work last week, and practically got trampled at the door as soon as everyone found out what it was. I didn't have reg. chocolate cake mix, so I used Devil's food instead. I also made my own sweetened whipped cream, because I didn't have time to wait for a tub of Cool Whip to thaw out. Oh, and I had Tia Maria instead of Kahlua. Close enough, I thought. Great, great, great, and easy to make as well.

  3. A friend of mine shared her version of this which is so delicious. We use devils food cake and add a teaspoon of vanilla extract and cinnamon to the batter. We use milk chocolate mousse and they now sell crushed heath bars in a bag to use. When this is all layered with rest of ingredients.....OMG!

  4. This triffle was very good. I made my own brownies from scratch (adding chocolate chips to the batter is a nice touch), but I found that I didn't need nearly an entire 9x13 pan; a 9" square pan would have made plenty. I used two boxes of the Nestle European-style mousse, 1 dark chocolate and 1 mocha. Finally I purchased 3 "king-size" Heath bars but did not use them all; another candy or just chocolate chips could be substituted. Overall, very good, simple, and easy to make variations.

  5. An party favorite. This was the hit of the day at our Memorial Day family BBQ! Easy to make and a dream to eat. I used two of the larger size instant pudding boxes and there was more than enough pudding. The next time I make this I think I will pipe in the pudding and the whipped cream to make for a better presentation.

Tweaks

  1. I ended up making these mini in some drinking glasses because I didn't have a large trifle and they worked out perfectly!

  2. I also don't crumble the cake. My baked rounds fit perfectly into my trifle bowl.

  3. Instead of cake, I use brownies, and I use instant espresso powder mixed with water to drizzle over the brownies. I also mix a bit of the espresso into half the cool whip for added coffee flavor when I layer it.

  4. I stumbled upon this while browsing the site. This is one of my all time favorite desserts to make. Got it from a Christmas/Holiday cookbook in a box of Kahlua about 19 years ago. I've been making it ever since then. We don't add the Kahlua anymore and instead of cake we always use brownies. It's always been a hit and my son has been making it for the last 7 years!

  5. I had some chocolate sponge cake I needed to use and I found this recipe to spruce up the cake. I used chocolate syrup instead of Kahlua and it was rich, chocolaty and delicious. My first trifle and it was super easy. Thanks for the recipe.
