Divine Meatball Sandwiches

"The spread on these meatball sandwiches is what really sets them apart from others. You can experiment and customize by using your favorite meatballs, sauces and fresh bread. Good for a party finger food, or for lunch or dinner. I promise no meatball sandwich will be the same again! Cook time includes entire process."

Questions & Replies

  1. I’ve always loved Food.com because it’s the only site that lets me add my own “notes” to the recipes, and then I can print the recipes with the notes.... NOW, there’s no “Print”— What happened.... I can no longer print the recipes at all....

  1. A messy treat! We used turkey meatballs and a fresh baked french loaf. Next time I would spread the cut-sides of the bread with the cream cheese mixture & cheese and broil until melted and lightly brown, THEN add the meatballs & sauce. Assembling the whole sandwich and baking as written made the outside of the bread a little too crunchy. We will also add crushed red pepper & a zippier sauce next time. A nice meatball sandwich that appeals to adults & kids alike.

  2. You weren't kidding when you said that the spread sets these incredible sandwiches apart. Hands down the best sandwiches I have ever had. I used Kaiser rolls instead of the suggested buns, and it turned out great. I had leftover spread as I was only feeding two people, and mixed that, the leftover meatballs and sauce, and leftover cheese together, and it made a great qucik lunch the next day.<br/><br/>Fantastic recipe, sure to be an instant classic in my house.

  3. This cream cheese spread made this! I love meatball subs & that just put it over the top! My slight differences were... made the sammy whole, spreaded top half w/cream cheese mix also, even tossed a few more shreds of mozzarella on top half (I'm a sucker for cheese)! Baked open for about 6 minutes the then closed up & baked for remaining time approx 6 min. Gooey cheesy deliciousness!

  4. Proud to be review 101 for this delicious meatball sandwich recipe. As the previous posters have said, the sauce makes this recipe. The spread is creamy, flavorful and glues the sandwich together. This sandwich is super messy but tasty. Grab the paper towel roll and dig in. Used bakery fresh baked soft bread and made as written. Next time we will add another dash of garlic powder. Kids and adults loved it. Perfect for a dinner or a party. Thanks for posting Jamie Renee. Enjoy! ChefDLH

  5. Everyone is right when they say the spread is what makes this so special, or divine as the title says. I've never liked meatball sandwiches before, but this recipe changed all that. I have tried it as written and also with low-fat cream cheese and low-fat mayo. They both taste the same and so I will be making this the low-fat version from now on. I will be using a different bread as the Italian bread that I used was way too thick. It was hard to take a bite and the meatballs went sliding out of the sandwich. Thanks for sharing this special sandwich.

Tweaks

  1. My tweak is I wrapped the bread in foil instead of putting on a foil lined sheet and baked at 300, for 25 minutes because we don’t like super crispy bread that crumbles when you hold it. Wrapping in foil the inner bread really gets infused with sauce, spread and gooey cheese lusciousness without pieces of bread disintegrating into your hand when you bite into it! Our preference for cheese is the mild flavor and melty texture of monterey jack and we stuffed in as much as we could.

  2. Added about a tsp garlic puree to the cheese mix and only had 1 1/4 cup mozzarella so also added 1/2 cup parmesan-romano shreeded cheese mix. Topped with a few sliced onions and sweet yellow peppers. So yummy

  3. These were delicious!! The only thing I did differently was use marinara sauce instead of spaghetti sauce. I doctored it up and let it simmer and the threw in the meatballs. Also, I don't like crunchy sandwiches so I left them open face and put them under the broiler to melt the spread and brown the inside of the bun. I then put the meatballs and marinara sauce on , top with melted cheese and hit them under the broiler again for a few seconds to melt the cheese.

  4. These were AWESOME!!! My wife had never had meatball sandwiches before and she loved these. These are probably the best Meatball Sandwiches I have ever had. Will definitely make these again. I used provolone cheese slices instead of shredded mozzarella cheese.

  5. I liked, guest found a bit gloppy and hard to eat (the wimp). I used 6 in. french rolls instead of loaves of bread, and cut down the middle vertically (kind of like a potato) - I thought the filling stayed in better that way. I think the cream cheese spread actually keeps the sauce from soaking in too much into the bread - other sandwiches of this type seem to disintegrate, and this one did not. Before spooning the meatballs in, I also put in a couple of small fresh mozarella balls into the sandwich. The cheese was soft but not runny and it tasted excellent. If you are avoiding meat but eat dairy, I think this could be an excellent cheese sandwich.
