Dry Oatmeal Mix

"This recipe came from the February/March 2003 issue of Taste of Home's Light and Tasty. I really have enjoyed this recipe and the ease of preparation. Also, very economical to have on hand. Those small packets of pre-flavored oatmeal do get pricey. 3 points per serving."

  1. This is such a great idea! Those packets of pre-sweetened oatmeal do get expensive and they are overly sweet. I tried the recipe this morning and I really liked it. I didn't add the dried fruit into the whole mix though. I decided I'd just add a tablespoon of dried fruit when I'm cooking it. That way I can vary the taste from day to day by using different dried fruits! Thanks

  2. Thank you so much for posting this! I have been looking through my Light and Tasty magazines all day looking for this specific recipe. This is so much better than the packaged stuff at the store. I like to make mine with a tropical medley of dried fruit.

  3. This is a great mix. I didn't have dried fruits, so I used sliced almonds. But I will try it again with raisins. Thanks Amber :) Made for cookbook tag game

  4. How perfect can oatmeal get? I added dried cherries ( yummmmm) and a touch of ground flax seed. I cut back a tad on the sugar too. Made in the microwave and I think next time I'll cook on the stove top and see if there is a difference. I'll let you know. Made for I reviewed tag.

  5. This recipe is GREAT! I make up a double batch without the fruit and keep it in the pantry. The kids add whatever fruit they want and just pop it in the microwave. A hot, delicious breakfast is only two minutes away. Perfect for a cold morning! Thank you for sharing this.

Tweaks

  1. Very good! I made the recipe as stated, except subbed allspice for the cloves since I am apparently out. This is great! It's very creamy. I made it the microwave. I cooked it for a minute, stirred and cooked for another minute. I made a double serving, so that may be why it took two minutes. I also like mine very thick so I can add milk. The flavorings are good, but I did add more cinnamon to my mix. Very good recipe! Thank you very much!

<p>I live in Arizona. Cooking is a relaxing hobby and I love finding healthy meals that have a lot of flavor and heart to them. Recipezaar has not let me down. I could not possibly pick a favorite cookbook. I love searching used bookstores for old cookbooks. I collect other cookbooks that look intresting or have healthy dishes. My collection is modest, but I love it. Also, I love the Taste of Home magazines. They have real food that real people cook. I would have to say my pet peeves are people who drive while talking on cell phones and people who cannot spell potato. It is p o t a t o not p o t a t o e. There is no e unless you are spelling the plural form of potato which is potatoes. I frequently see that word mispelled in recipes and it makes me think the recipe is somehow devalued because of the spellings. The Zaar system of ratings works for me. I do try to explain myself in my reviews and welcome any questions or comments on what I have said. It is not my intention to be mean-spirited if I did not like something (it is rare for me not to like a recipe though):) Recipezaar brings such a nice element to my life and I feel it has been enriched by the wealth of knowledge both in everyone's contributed recipes and on the forums. Also, it is such a nice feature that you can log on practically any time to get help with a recipe or ingredient that might otherwise be imtimidating to prepare by yourself.</p>
