Dutch Oven Campfire Cobbler

"I combined a couple of ideas and came up with this. This is for a deep 12 inch cast iron dutch oven. Amounts are approximate, use whatever size cake mix and pie filling you have, easily double the recipe for bigger crowds. We burned ours in about 10 minutes by putting a too hot log on top so BE SURE TO CHECK IT OFTEN!"

Questions & Replies

  1. My son wants to make a chocolate cherry cobbler. at his campout.... has anyone ever made this with a chocolate cake mix?

  2. So I don't have to do anything with the cake mix? Literally just pour it out of the box and put the butter on top?

Reviews

  1. I made three of these with one small addition: I poured a little bit (about a cup, a little more for the larger ovens) of lemon-lime soda over the cake mix prior to adding the butter slices. I feel this helps make it more cake-like on top. I made a peach with yellow cake, blackberry with yellow cake, and a cherry with devil's food chocolate cake. The peach and cherry were in 14" Dutch ovens. I cooked them in a stack with 16 - 18 briquettes under both 14" ovens and 14 - 16 briquettes under and on top of the 12 inch oven at the top of the stack. Served 36 people with plenty left over for breakfast. ?? Received rave reviews.

  2. Worked great at our Cub Scout camping trip! I’ve also heard this called a “dump cake” recipe.

  3. Just got back from camping with Scout Troop and Pack 115. We had made this cobbler in apple and cherry. It was very delicious. I could not stop eating.

  4. This was an amazing cobbler. My scouts made 6 batches that fed 30 young marines and 10 boy scouts. There were no complaints and many complements. We did 4 peach pie filling and 2 cherry pie filling. I am a baker by trade and this is my new favorite cobbler!

  5. I made this for Thanksgiving and it was a huge hit with my family. Even my youngest son who doesn't like cherries loved it. I didn't stick with the straight recipe though. My only complaint was once it was all done, I opened the lid and it slipped and spilt a bunch of ashes onto 1/2 of the cobbler. Oh well, whats Thanksgiving without a good story! :)

Tweaks

  1. Nothing! This is great as is!

  2. Omit the cake mix, make standard cobbler dough ( mix the dry ingredients at home and put in a plastic bag).

  3. I took out 1/3 of the cake mix and cut in the butter, and I also added 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp. nutmeg into the dry mix as well as a 1/2 cup of oatmeal. Then I mixed up the cake mix with water until it was a pancake batter consistency...oh and another 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. First I placed tinfoil inside the dutch oven, then poured out the two cans of pie cherries, then poured the cake batter over the top, then I put the dry mixture on top of that. I think I used about 25 briquettes total as well.
