"Recipe from a missionary who just returned from Chile. Very authentic tomato and onion salad that is slightly different from the other recipe on the site."

directions

  • Cut onion in thin slices/strips like "feathers." Rinse the onion in a collander under running cold water for several minutes, firmly squeezing the onion to sweeten the onion and remove some of the strong taste.
  • Peel the tomatoes. Cut in thin wedges, similar in shape to the onion strips. Season to taste with remaining ingredients.

  1. This recipe for Ensalada Chilena is completely authentic. When you follow the instructions to squeeze the finely-sliced onions and mix with the peeled tomatoes, you get the juiciness that is typical. I squeeze my onions with the salt required for the recipe. It tastes exactly like what you get in Chile.

  2. Just enjoyed this refreshing salad. Served over a bed of fresh picked greens. Squeezed some fresh lime juice over it. Made fro ZWT 2011. Thanks :)

  3. A nice jazzy side salad! Even though we love onions sometimes the spring onions can be really overpowering, but the rinse and dry method you used to prepare these really did help mellow them out. Thanks for the post.

  4. Perfect salad in every way. I couldn't stop eating this, and that's prior to serving, so you might want to make more then you think I feathered the onion and the tomato as suggested, and this made such a beautiful presentation. You won't need to change one thing about the 10 star good to the bone fresh salad. Just make more....then you need...ZWT 7
